This is a Collection Call from UCB Inc (United Collection Bureau) based out of Toledo but with many offices.  I also received a call that just said "Please return this call as soon as possible and reference this number."  I tried the return number and was immediately hung up once, then transfered to voicemail box as they were supposedly closed although it was only 7pm and their stated hours of operation are 8:30am until 8:00pm Mon-Thur.  Then it said to leave my name and reference number, then told me that I was unable to leave a voicemail as the mailbox was full and it hung up on me.

I decided to look up UCB online and called 4 of their toll free numbers before I finally got someone on the line.  They do collections for all types of institutions, mine was a very small medical bill that I thought had been taken care of.  Anyway, that is who/what they are.  Good luck getting a hold of anyone if you want to pay off your bills.

I did tell them the trouble I had and all I had to do to get someone on the phone.  They said they will look into it, because I told them, must be they don't really want to "collect money" too badly if they aren't accepting return calls.

This company is a sham. They are rude and constantly hang up on me when I try calling them. They have the wrong phone number and call about 5 times a week. Unfortunately, each msg they leave on my unlimited minutes voicemail lasts about 20 minutes, so I have had to pay astronomical phone bills for going over my minutes.

You cannot honestly tell me this is a reputable company. All they want to do is collect your social security number.

    Watch out for this scam.

This is United Collection Bureau out of Toledo. They claim to have accounts they don't have. After calling them numerous times to be hung up on I finally talked with a supervisor who yelled and screamed at me and THEN hung up on me. I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and they are currently being investigated. They violdated FDCPA numerous times throughout the call with me. Their repsonse to the complaint thus far is that their compliance person has reviewed the call and found no violations of the FDCPA. Well, I recorded the call and every court in the land will enforce that they violated numerous time. BE VERY CAREFUL OF THIS COMPANY AND RECORD ALL CONTACT WITH THEM!!!!!!!!!!

To that last comment.  I think it's hilarious that you went on a tangent about the laws that "THEY" break, when you yourself are suggesting recording calls which itself is illegal if you don't disclose what you are doing.  Get a life and pay your bills, then maybe they won't be calling you.

It's not illegal if you inform them you are recording them. And I would strongly suggest you record all calls with this company.

I finally called them back since I get two or three calls a week from this company. The caller ID says "Unknown". It was a legitimate collections agency. I owed a $25 and some change on a medical bill that had been submitted to my health insurance, but not paid in full by it. The Indian agent did not ask me for my ss# or anything like that. He verified my name to me, actually. The date of service and amount are correct, so it was legitimate. He asked if I wanted to take care of the balance today and I said I would prefer to pay it by mail. He is sending a bill with a return envelope.

I have a message in with the medical provider to verify that I do, indeed, owe anything. From the sounds of it, UCB is *bad* news.

I have started recieving phone calls from "Unknown" or "419" yes, my caller ID shows the number as 419. Everytime they leave a voicemail I can barely understand what they are saying. But the last young man who called spoke very clearly but with a thick accent and at the end of the voice mail told me I needed to call and discuss a business matter with him, repeated his name and then said "this is not related to bills so call me back."
    uh-huh.

This company calls constantly, a couple of times a week and appears to be a collection agency. I will not call them back. I can only see their number if they leave a voice mail - on my Caller ID  it shows up as something like 'unknown 419' or 'unknown and some other 3 digit number' - it changes. Isn't it illegal for a collection agency to block their number? They obviously are usurping the 'blocked' or 'anonymous call' controls  people put on t heir phones and it is deceptive. I have no idea what they are calling about but when they leave a message, they leave a phone number and a reference number.

A legitimate collections agency?  When did you authorize your medical information to be sent off shore to some "Indian?"  Sounds like a HIPPA violation to me.  Oh how ignorant the debtors are in regards to their rights!  I have yet to encounter a collection agency that could prove they had the authority to collect any alleged debt, let alone prove that they owned any alleged debt.

It is unfortunate that some people will do anything to avoid paying bills legitimately owed in their names. The information is passed along becasue they are considered a business associate under HIPAA (not"HIPPA"...this is a common misspelling) Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Be honest with yourself... are these really "alleged debts" that you are "avoiding" so that you don't have to "be responsible???" If you don't owe then dispute and put a cease and decist on file. If you do owe it and are just trying to dodge responsibility, guess it's time for you to look in the mirror and ask who's really in the wrong here... just sayin my friend :)

As a person who is in the business I can say comments of personal information is a valid argument without knowing who is on line, but works both ways. Collections is a sensitive subject to people who care about their name and wouldn't want a debt being spilled to any average joe who is on the line. It's required by all clients who you originally took some service from to do so, as well as federal government. On that note so is a validation of debt sent to the address provided by you upon receiving account in collections. As far as personal experience by account reps, no company has a perfect list of employees. Not one. BBB rating speaks for itself (being an 'A')
Before complaining and judging, apply the nature of the business, subject matter and your overall moral compass before bashing the collection agency. It's a legit business and far from easy to work. Need to understand the view of agency and the guidelines we are required follow.
