Called stating they were a consumer protection agency but did not know what they were protecting. Asked for a credit card #. Sounded bogus so I gave them no info.

That number is for consumer protection for Macy's.com and Blooingdale's.com (same company).  They were probably trying to verify an online order that you made.

They should not be asking for a credit card number, so that was probably a perp.

Also, received a call similar to the above but would not give me any information regarding which purchase they were supposedly protecting. Sounds like a very dubious operation - do not give them any information. Either that or they have very untrained staff !

This company calls everytime I order something from Bloomingdales.  No matter if it is sent to my home, no matter what the amount.  they say I must call back immediately or my order will be cancelled and leave a 15 digit / letter I'm supposed to remember.  Last night they called at 10 PM about an order I placed at 7 AM.... after 5 such calls I gave up.  Bloomingdales didn't care, so I canceled the order, cancelled my credit card and am returning what I ordered.  Bloomingdales had HORRIBLE customer service, and the only thing they did that I requested was to cancel my accont.  The only thing they seem to do write.  they still send me crap in my mail and jam up my email. How do I get a federal agency involved in the unwanted soliticing.  Johnarlva@aol.com

Just received a call and I didn't pick up, but the caller left this telephone number and a reference number for me to call back and confirm an order from Macys.com.  When I called back, all I was asked to do after providing the reference number was verify the shipping address for an order I placed on Macys.com.  I don't use my billing/home address for deliveries as I am not home during the day so I use my work address.  I wasn't asked to provide any other information.  I am happy they verify because you never know.  By the way, the number that showed on my caller id was different but is listed on Macys.com as "Macys Credit and Customer Services" so it's legit.

Was from Macy's Fraud Protection.  They left voice mail and when i called back, all they wanted was the reference number they left on the voicemail (which was different than my Macy's order number) and to verify the shipping address since it was different than billing address.  It's a shame there's so much fraud these days that the consumers end up footing the bill for all the scammers.

I called the number back after receiving their message via my wife.  A man said he was inquiring about a Macy's Gift Card order I had made earlier today.  I called Macy's, and eventually got their "3d Party Billing" department, who confirmed the 866-282-8977 number was Macy's double check on their Gift Card Billing system.
    • Caller: Said they were calling on behalf of Macy's.

This is a legitimate call- I actually checked my AMEX statement and saw a charge from Bloomingdales on my card that I did not order. I called in through Bloomingdales posted toll free number just to make sure that it wasn't some sort of spoofing or spam and they connected me to the fraud department.

If this number is for Bloomingdales or Macys there is no reason for them to be calling me....I have never done business with either.... they have called me 3 times in less than 24 hours.   not very Pro to not leave a voice mail......

This is number is a fraud.
I called them with the supposed reference number.
I give them the ref #
    they can't find it
    they ask for my name
they can't find anything under my name
they ask for my phone number
they can't find anything under my phone number
This is getting fishy now because I've had an account with macy's for 9 years.
They run through their script again and ask me the same questions.
    NOTHING
They transfer me now to customer service.
Wait!!! Customer service?  what's this dept? Consumer protection.
    Now
customer service asked me the same questions and they have no record of me.
They ask me for my credit card number under which i made the purchase.
UHHHHHHH.  No, I will not give it to you.
They ask me for my social security number.
    UHHHHHH, no.
    I hang up.

Total scam. I placed an order with Macy's and got the very strange call, an hour later, to call back this number to verify macys.com purchase. They left 8-1-866-282-8977 with reference number, nothing like my order#. Since I had actually immediately cancelled (due to a shipping address screwup I made) I called back assuming it was for a legitimate reason I was being contacted. I Immediately got a recording saying don't miss out on your chance for $100 WalMart card. Oh kaaay, what? Then I didn't press the number it told me to, figuring it would transfer me on and I could skip it. It wouldn't let me! Kept saying "don't miss out hit option 1", "you don't want to miss hit 1", then finally "seriously don't miss out hit any key". Really? Any key? Fine. Then this really bad connection rings up with a guy in a very thick foreign accent, talking about "no gimmicks blah blah blah" told him I was returning Macy.com call and just wanted to talk about that. Said lines busy so transferred to them and that's why I'm getting card..... uh huh. Alright, but I don't care about the WalMart gift card, I want to talk about the reason they called me. "Well what's your favorite store?" pffft, I'm game, "Target" I say. He then rambles off something so fast and then says "just a one time processing fee of $4.95". WTF!? "NO", I say. "I will not pay for anything." The guy immediately disconnects me.
So I went back online to Macy's.com and got the correct 800# there and called. Ugh. So disappointed. Get a guy apologizing for "the inconvenience" said the number IS NOT A MACY'S NUMBER!!!! And would enter into system to report, apologized again and again. While there I verified the order was cancelled, and just gave up from there.

Got an email telling me to call back 866-282-8977 saying there was an issue about a Macy's order I had placed a day ago. I didn't know if this was spam but I did in fact place an order with Macy's and the email had stated that unless I call back by 6 PM today, my order would not be released which has never happened to me before being a Macy's customer for over 8 years. I called the Macy's number from their website @ 800-289-6229 and the Macy's rep confirmed that they did in fact emailed me and needing me to confirm my address/reference number to prevent consumer fraud. Go figure. I recommend anybody else who receives a similar email to call the Macy's number listed on their website since based from the other emails here, the 866-282-8977 is unreliable ... though I never called that number. Hope this helps.

A lady called me with 8662828977 from Macy's consumer protection. She wanted to verify my order information before shipping. I felt she was suspicious.  I refused to talk to her. I called to macy's offical number 18002896229 that I found it on Macy's website.  An agent picked it  up and said that they did called me regarding my order information. Because of no response from me, my order was canceled. The number 8662828977 is one of their internal phone numbers in the dept. His coworker might use it to call me. At the end, he replaced the order for me and gave me a new reference number.

I got a voice mail from phone # 866-282-8977 about an online order that was just made at Macy's and they told me to call back with the reference #  that they left on the voice mail message to verify if  it was made by me (which wasn't) . I called them back and they only asked for my first and last name, nothing else. They told me if I wanted to, I could go make a police report too, but I opted not to because my credit card's fraud department was handling it anyway. I called Macy's 800 # to verify the 866 # and they said they have many phone numbers and can't verify, but the kind lady at customer protection department asked me to give her the reference # from the voice mail and she was able to trace that I did speak with someone at Macy's today, therefore, proving  the 866-282-8977 number is in fact a legitimate Macy's phone number. On my caller ID it showed up as a call from Phoenix, AZ with # 480-929-3000 as well. Hope this info helps.
