    They will not stop calling and will not identify themselves.  I am sick of this, they say I owe but can't prove it, something about 12 years ago.

    The number does indicatea source, but they also use 757-321-2503, which shows Portfolio Recovery. They buy large batches of OLD unpaid credit card debts for pennioes on the dollar, at most. They will try anything to get any kind of payment from you, as that starts the debt cycle again... At that point they can sue in smallclaims court, as it is considered a new debt.. not one past the limit most states have on recovery.
    A bad news outfit, and, no they probably won't giveup calling... just don't answer, but they also use calls that come in as "NO DATA".

    These people have been calling me for the past month, every day, sometimes up to 20 times a day. The calls are spaced apart every 10-15 minutes. Kicker is, they are calling my fax line and the fax keeps picking up but does that stop them.....No...MAJOR ANNOYANCE!

    I called these people back to have my number taken off their "calling list" and the representative told me that they don't have a calling list because they're a debt collection company and they were looking for 'so and so'.  I told her he wasn't a resident here and I don't have any affiliation or business with their company and she said she'd delete my phone number from their system.....hhhmmmm.....

    One of these parasites called today (a Sunday afternoon) asking for my mother who passed away three years ago. They refused tell me the purpose of their call other then it was "personal business". When I told them that she was dead, they told me to fax a copy of the death certificate to them. Again I asked them what this was about, and they refused. I told them to go f*ck themselves and hung up the phone.

    I had no idea who these people were or whatwas the purpose of their call until I googled the number that showed up on my Caller ID and was directed here.

    A machine called and asked for my son. I said he was not here and this was not his number. I was put on hold and then a woman identifying herself as MIRASOL said she needed to talk to my son on "personal business" but would not say what company she was with or what the business was. I later called the number she gave me-- the above number-- and an announcement said I had reached "Portfolio Recovery."

    I have no clue who they are, but having just been scammed by a fake phonemail service that somehow attached to my phone bill, i am taking no chances!!!!!

    Just to correct what Harry said.  The Fair Credit Reporting Act states that the 7 year reporting period is defined as follows:

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The 7-year period referred to in paragraphs (4) and (6) of subsection
    (a) shall begin, with respect to any delinquent account that is placed for collection(internally or by referral to a third party, whichever is earlier), charged to profit and loss, or subjected to any similar action, upon the expiration of the 180-day period beginning on the date of the commencement of the delinquency which immediately preceded the collection activity, charge to profit and loss, or similar action.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    This means that starting 180 days from the date of delinquency + 7years, no credit reporting agency by law can report the debt.  They MUST drop it.  Talking to someone about it does not start the 7 years over again. Trust me I have done this... if they are trying to collect a debt that is older that 7 yrs + 180 days FROM THE DELINQUENCY tell them they are violating the Fair Credit Reporting Act.  After you say those magic words, they change their tune so fast.  The company that tried this with me hung up as soon as I said that. They had also attempted to tell me that I made a payment 4 years into it, which was actually when the debt was sold to their company.

    Hope this helps clarify the 7 year rule.

    mm..i dont know about that 180 days is added to the 7 years.ev4n though i read what you wrote i dont know if thats what it means.i read that nationwide and nco was fined over one million dollars for reporting the wrong dates to the collection agencies.they would post the date on the credit report when they charged off on it and what the lawyer said the date should of been the very first month the consumer missed his first payment thats when the 7 year starts not 180 dats later

    These morons have ragged me for years over a debt that is 5 years out of statute. I sent them several requests in writing to verify the last payment on the debt, but they refuse, because they know it is out of statute.
    They have numerous alias companies/names, and they think they are going to wear me down, but at the end of the day, I have an attorney standing by, just waiting for them to slip up. That is why they don't say anything when they call....MORONS!!
