I got a call from 8667237373 today, they said they were from Fannie Mae and someone had given my name for a reference. It turns out they were looking for a phone number for my grandson.

This company has called me 2x this week and has not saved a message.
Information about this company was found by calling them back to get the company name & then searching the company name.

    F.Y.I.
I have no business with this company...

Someone named "Navia" called and left a message on machine indicating someone here had been listed as a reference on a loan application.

We know for certain no one has included us as a reference.

According to other sites, this place is running a scam.  Definitely beware!

Message stated from Department of Education. Said we were put down as a reference from someone for student loans-turns out was daughter who they were trying to get phone # for to "update records".
    1) Daughter would never have put us down as a reference.
    2) Daughter had paid off all student loans previously, and loans weren't from this company.
They stated the records could be from as far back as 2002. Explained were were estranged, and therefore this was a source of stress, please don't call. Insisted we would have to talk to daughter-duh, what part of estranged don't you people get. Finally told them I would be blocking their number, as we clearly couldn't help them, and they would not acknowledge that fact...

I had at least three messages claiming to be from "Navia" at Department of Education, Loan Services.
They said that someone had listed me as a reference on a student loan application.
They asked me to call this number (866-723-7373).
Most likely a scam.  I did NOT call them.

I obviously was assigned a phone number who's former owner must still be in debt.

For years we have gotten calls for someone that does not live here. Different people & agencies are given. Back before identity theft was well known, we would pick up after call screening, ask questions, and volunteer that we have had this number for years. They would say they were taking the name & number off the list but months later it always started up again.  After years, we cut to the chase and informed them of pertinent information and to request to be taken off the list forever. Even if they would, who ever next buys the IOU debt or next gets assigned to researching it starts the cycle all over again. So we just stopped picking up all unknown callers all together AND the goofballs saying "It's Me"  or "Pick Up". [Friends/ Relatives Please learn to to just say who you are. I know a lot of people and if I haven't spoken to you lately I may not recognize the voice].

There is an unprofessional trait to this new call that I hope D.O.E.L.S. or any reputable company/ loan service would never use: They have a RoboCalled digital voice  of a friendly female start after a human or answering machine says "Hello", triggering it. You can always tell a call is fishy/ robo  when a live person doesn't start talking immediately. It's not unheard of, but formal companies generally do things with class and speak with you live from the start. Anyway, the digital voice starts after a few seconds with the same phrase you all get with an override blank for the person's name spoken by a different voice digitizer, and then back to the digital prerecording. I couldn't understand the digitized name so I was on alert and just let voice mail get it.

With creative identity theft going on and currently involved in several of the infamous ID Theft Stories on the news, I looked this number up today to see if an account of mine may be linked to someone's loan or if anyone else received  a nuisance call.  I see I am not alone and it is probably a collector. If it was a crook and they were good enough I'm sure they could probably default a falsified loan and tell them to come after me - though that may be improbable without official calls, verification, and signing physical documents and such but who really knows today!?

Anyway, I am now so much more relieved to know that it is just the iDiOt  PaTroL TRYing to find someone, and not something more serious.  For today at least.

Just think what it will be like in a few years when millions more phone numbers are repurposed, recycled, or reused!

    Thanks Everyone.

They called but didn't leave message...Not many local banks would not leave a complete message for call back.
Might be for college students who lived in apt downstairs but had to quit school since it was too expensive.
I'm guessing all these calls are for people who quit school in the 2008 depression and moved back home with parents or got jobs in better economies in different states. Since people get cell phones and move to get better jobs, the chance of finding young people are slim to none. They may have not remembered that money was loaned or thought banks may have written off a few thousand dollars after the big bank bailout. Either way it is a waste of time to spend money paying telemarketers to call people when the chance of breaking even is very small. I'm guessing that the tax laws require a bank or loan company to pay someone to try to collect a debt before allowing a deduction or write-off of a bad debt.

I received a call from Navia Dept of Ed Loan office (866-723-7373) saying that someone had given my name as a reference. When I asked who, the woman on the phone told me "Jessica Howell". Google that name and be shocked.
This is definitely a scam. Do NOT give out information or call this number back.

Number belongs to the Collections department of Navient, a company that deals with student loans, formerly part of Sallie Mae.  I confirmed the number does belong to them by calling the main contact number on their website.  I was not going to call this random number that called me with little or no information without verifying.  They called because I was apparently used as a reference on a school loan by an ex who apparently is skipping out on his loan payments.  Haven't had any contact with him for years and don't have any of his info so good luck finding him...

It IS a legitimate company and it COULD BE a legitimate call... so maybe you have someone who used your info for their loan and now they're a deadbeat too.  If not call them back and they will look your number up, and if you tell them you don't know the person they will take you off their list.

Called repeatedly by Navia noting I had been referenced on someone's student loan. Called home number, which is unchanged in about 20 years. We have no one that would reference us for a loan. Our adult children have no debt. I concur with others on this thread that this has the makings of a scam.
