- carl| 2 repliesClaims to be Progressive Ins. and wants my driver's license number. Not sure if it's a scam or not as I did recently get a new DL in a new state.
- Caller: Progressive
- S. SmithClaimed to be Progressive Insurance asking to verify your driver's license. Asks for Date of Birth to 'verify' your identity. When I asked caller why they were calling me, he couldn't tell me. I actually had business with Progressive, so I immediately called Progressive and asked if they were trying to contact me. My file showed no record of outgoing calls at all.
In short -- this number is trying to phish for your personal information. Deal with them with extreme caution. - GuestThis number called me yesterday morning. It disconnected once my voice mail picked up, so only left a 1-second message of silence.
I am also currently doing business with Progressive, so I guess that could be the connection. Definitely sounds like a phishing attempt to me. If an actual Progressive rep needs any info from me, they have my email and in the past have contacted me from numbers with local area codes, not an 866 number.
If you talk to someone at this number, I would not give them any personal information. - GuestSo now they have called for the third time today and this last time it left an automated message. Here is what is said:
"This is an important message from Progressive for (my wife's name). Please call 1 866 840 4148 and enter message code number 50XXXX to retrieve your message. Thank you from Progressive Direct Insurance Company, or one of the corporate affiliates. Bye."
Already suspicious, not just annoying. - steve2nd time today they've called. Once ph went to v/mail they hung up. Also called 7 days earlier. Very suspicious.
- Caller: Unk
- CarolThis number called me at 9:54 am Central today. They didn't leave a message.
- CarolI posted earlier today...they since called me again without leaving a message. Then they called a third time, at 7:51 p.m., and left an automated message like the one provided by another user above, except with a different code. I also have insurance with Progressive, so this is weird.
- DaveI got robo-called from this # earlier this morning. The robot said it was Progressive and something about they have a driver's license in a state other than the one my policy is in on file for my account. I hit the one or 2 requested #'s to talk to a representative, and that is when I went from thinking it was probably legit, to feeling like I was on the phone with a Nigerian Prince (crook). I confirmed my name and birthdate right off the bat, but from that point, the guy could not even provide a straight forward answer to a straight forward question. He kept talking in circles, and no matter the question I asked he would end up saying something about, I don't need to worry about any penalties or things like that if I don't give him the info. WTF? What penalties would I be worried about and why? Who are you and what are you talking about? I told the guy he was creeping me out and hung up.
So then I called the customer service number on my proof of coverage card, 1-800-776-4737, and the rep was able to confirm that they do have robo-calls of this nature currently going out. I told them they either have a serious problem in their customer service dept, or a serious security breach. I gave them the 866-840-4246 # that called me, and they will be looking into it specifically and getting back with me to confirm it was actually progressive.
Long story short: it appears to be a legit call from Progressive conducted in an absolutely ridiculously shady manner.- Caller: Progressive
- Worried| 1 replyThis number has called my cell several times over the past couple of days but not leaving voicemail. Last night they did leave a robo-message to call them back at 1-866-840-4148 and punch in the message code that they gave me. The message said that their records indicated that I needed to update my information with them as they'd recently discovered I had a DL in another state. I DO use Progressive for my auto insurance, but I only have a valid DL in one state. I've been living in my current state for over 6 years now.
Just called this number back and punched in the code they gave me. A human (male, sounded American) picked up and asked if they were speaking to me (giving my full name including middle initial which is what I use on my checking account). I said, "Yes." He then quickly asked me to verify my date of birth. I balked here and became suspicious, paused a long time and then told him, "You know what... never mind" before ending the call.
It sounded legit at first, but on further pondering this I realized that as many proofs of identification as one has to provide to get a valid drivers license, I highly doubt that anyone else has obtained a DL in MY name in a different state. The DL I had from the state I moved from OVER SIX YEARS AGO expired looooong ago. Something is definitely fishy here.- Caller: Unknown
- Guest| 1 replyI just got this phone call, it felt weird, but I answered their questions (DOB and drivers' license number)...got a little "uh-oh" feeling after the fact, since I've had my new license for two years....I looked up the number and found this feed, panicked, and called one of Progressive's customer service numbers...the lady was very nice and confirmed it was them...she said Progressive will ask for that info, but never a credit card number (that would be a red flag)...she also said if I ever got another phone call I felt uneasy with, it would always be fine to say you're unavailable at that moment, and then call Progressive back yourself, so you know it's legit...
- CourtneyDon't fall for this!! Voicemail claimed the call was from Progressive but when I called the real Progressive number they had no record of contacting me. I reported the phone number, etc to the real Progressive (and you should too).
- Caller: NOT Progressive
- NotHappyIt seems to be Phisher scam attack.
- report it to progressive & never answer it.
Progressive is a good company the would never cold call people & ask personal questions.
Do not answer & do not call them back.
Never give personal info to Anyone - especially some random strange caller out of the blue.
That is a bad idea. Hang up & report weird calls to your phone service provider (AT&T, Verizon, etc....)- Caller: False name given - agent unknown
- HESIt is Progressive. I logged into my account and called their CS # directly. Turns out they had my son's license listed under state we don't live in - so they were calling to check on that. The woman I spoke to did not know about the automated calling - but when she looked at my son's info (who the automated call was asking for) she immediately noticed his license-state was different then the rest of us the policy.
- Caller: Progressive
- QQGot a call from this number this morning claiming to be progressive and asked me for my driver's license number b/c my record showed that i have a out of state driver's license. it's very suspicious because I have been with progressive for five years now and i never changed address etc.
- elleGot the same call as the others, sounded not-legit, but I called in. I only gave the person on the line my DL# after asking THEM for verification (my policy number) that it was actually Progressive. Just checked my online policy - and my old DL was on there (I had never changed it).
My vote: poorly run, shady seeming, but legit.- Caller: Progressive
- GirlyGirl replies to carlIt is progressive, but I too was uncomfortable giving my information to someone who randomly called me so I called progressive myself and they took care of it. I just think it was much safer and legit. They should really be telling people to call them back rather than calling and asking for identifying info over the phone.
- WorriedThis is a call from Progressive call although the above posts freaked me out. The results of the call were changes to my policy and I did receive those from Progressive.
Agree that not handled well by Progressive. It appears they had system screw up and are having to call people to clean up.- Caller: Progressive
- scottHad the same experience... fishing for personal info... oddly enough someone also recently tried to apply for a credit card in my name using stolen personal information. (It was caught when screened by the credit card company and a fraud alert was placed). Im thinking Progressive leaked some personal info on their client list since everyone who gets this call are actually progressive customers.
- guesti call a call from this number several times a day i answer and they dont say anything or leave a message they dont hang up till i do whi is this and how do i make them stop
- ReggiI got this phone call 3 times today. First two, they didn't leave a message, but the last one they left telling me to call this number and enter a message retrieval number.
I did and was connected to an English speaking operator who verified my name and DOB . I explained the message I got and she stated that I had a MN DL number listed. When I asked her to give me that number, it was the old number. I had moved to WI 6 months ago and never changed the number on my Progressive Policy.
She changed it.
I immediately went online to check my policy and there was a change of my DL number at the same time.
This was a completely legitimate call.
Poorly handled...but legit.- Caller: Progressive
