Says I owe them money.  Is this a scam?

I don't know, I received a call also saying they were lawyers, but the number is for a credit company. They were fully willing to take money over the phone to avoid them suing me.. I did go to pay them and then thought I should ask for proof since I have no such bill on my credit report. They didn't like that and the only proof they had was a bill they made up on there letterhead saying I agreed to pay the balance. When I asked for proof again they said I would get a detailed bill AFTER I paid them. I am contacting an attorney to look into the matter for me. They did give me a number I could call to ask for details, they said it was the bank, but when I dialed it it said I was calling the National Credit Group, which is the same company I believe.

Got a debt collection call from John Goldman and Stephanie Fisk from Hoffman & Associates out of the blue. I found one website and the links don't work on the page.They are not listed with Better Business Bureau, they are not listed on the California State web site business directory. They want me to pay $506 to "pay" my debt. Asked for info in writing and they sent me an email. Address listed is a post office. I can't find any info on National Credit Group either....

i received a call from the same guy John Goldman who says that they were detained by national credit group about a debt with Wachovia bank. the amount that they stated was way off in which I remember having a balance but not for the amount they told me. they gave me the number to national credit group but no one ever answers the phone.. I have tried googling the law firm that he said he worked for which is Kroger Meyers association arbitration law firm.. I cant get any real answers I asked them to valid the debt and they said they will have to see if they can get the file of the original documentation.. I just don't know if they are legit or not.. I cant find the law firm anywhere.....

I received a phone call out of the blue and at first i was suspicious too.  After speaking with them, they actually sent me to verify my debt at the bank.  I had already known about this matter, i was just hoping it would go away if I continued to ignore it.  Not only were they fair and understanding though all of this, in the end I avoided what could have been a whole lot worse.   Hey, hardly anyone is excited when an old debt is brought to their attention; I know I wasn't.  But hiding behind the truth of the matter and calling them fraud seems like a diversion.  The bottom line is: I paid the bill and had a letter of release of liability sent to me for my records.  I can now put this behind me for good.  It hurt for a minute, but if I paid my bills like I should have-this situation would have never occurred.  I can only blame myself, not anyone else.
