I used to be an underwriter with GEICO (left for a higher paying job at another company), and this is the number to my former department. Things to remember when you get left this number:

1) They are calling you to collect or provide important information about your policy. CALL THEM BACK or your policy could cancel or have a surcharge applied to it. It's a part of the process to perform due diligence and send emails and letters along with the calls, but don't mess around on this stuff. Just call back.

2) This is a toll free national number and your call is routed by your area code, so if you're calling from a phone that originated outside your current state BE PATIENT and let them transfer you to the right people.

3) If you don't have your policy number just make sure you have your name and phone number that's most likely to be on your account. They can look you up that way.

4) If the account in question is not in your name they will not speak with you unless they have been given DOCUMENTED EXPRESS PERMISSION by the NAMED INSURED. This means they don't care if you set it up online, or if you make the payments, or if you're a driver on the policy, or if you own the car, or they spoke with you last time. No note, no talk. DON'T ARGUE, DON'T BLATHER ABOUT HOW RIDICULOUS IT IS. IT IS FOR THE INSURED'S PROTECTION. Just get the owner of the policy to call, write or e-mail them to give your name and permission to discuss and/or make changes with you. They will also need to provide your date of birth so they can identify you when you call in.

I hope that can help some people avoid getting cancelled, and help my old colleagues avoid some stupid arguments.
