We got a phone call today from 888-230-6262, the person said they were from Bank of America, and said they were making a follow up phone call about someone using my identity to apply for a new card.  I immediatley thought this was phishy, I checked Bank of America website and no such contact number, then I searched on the number and came across all of these posts, which helps to confirm its bogus.  Thanks!

I got a call on my cell from 302-458-1590 about card services and I needed to call them back at 888-230-6262 and provide a reference number of: 266346698. I looked up the 888 number to call back and here I am. No idea what they wanted and I didn't call back.

It's not a scam... It's the fraud department for bank of amerca.... The reason why they are calling is because either you submitted an application for a credit card, or someone did it for you in your name ( Id theft) they are trying to check if the application is false or not... If not they will need to verify to make sure it is you... It's not a scam, you don't pay for anything, it's just part of the customer protection unit for boa... How do I know? Because I work in the CPU department for boa...

It's a legit call from Bank of America. I applied for a credit card on BofA website, they called me the next day just to confirm I am who I am. Told them I am not comfortable giving out sensitive info like SSN over the phone so they asked me other vague questions from my credit report enough to confirm my identity. That's it.

Call BOA and ask them yourself if you are not sure. It is a scam. And a not very belivable one at that!

I got a call from same number saying they were from Fidelity Investments. I'm pretty sure it's scammers.

I received this letter over the weekend I called the real BOA # and they confirmed that this is not a legit number they checked my social and said that nothing has been opened with them or even tried this number is a SCAM!!

I received a letter that had Bank of America on the letterhead.  It was dated October 20, 2015; it had a reference number that I hesitate to write here.  The first paragraph began:   "We are making every effort to approve your recent request for the BankAmericard Travel Rewards Platinum Plus Visa.  After reviewing your information, we find it necessary to verify the information on your application.  Please call us at the number listed below so that we can verify this information."  The letter goes on and on and finally on the reverse page this phone number is given 1.888.230.6262.   Also a phone number is given for Experian, National Consumer Assistance Center (1.888.397.3742)  I have no idea if that is correct.   Page 3 has   "important notices" regarding Fair Credit Reporting; Equal credit opportunity Act Notice; Credit Score Dislosure;

 I did NOT ever apply for this credit card or any other credit card.  I have no accounts at BOA.  My personal experience with BOA is that their fraud department is less than helpful.   BOA sell/give/share your name with other entities that then send you mail with the BOA logo saying they are offering free insurance.   The next thing you know a monthly fee is being debited from your account.  It is very difficult to get these debits stopped.  When you then   close out your account they tell you that when a debit comes in to a closed account that they can reopen that account and charge you a fee for not having enough funds to pay that debit charge. I just cannot imagine that they are legally able to pull that one off.  But because they said they could, I will NEVER do business with Bank of America.  I believe BoA enables scammers and makes their  life easier.     I do not know what SMS means???

888-230-6262 is a SCAM!
I received a letter from "Bank of America" telling me to call because they needed me to call 888-230-6262 to verify some information about the credit card I applied for. I didn't apply for a credit card and the letter seemed suspicious. So, I checked out the BOA website and called THAT number. I realized that the phone number on the website and that on the letter were close, but different - even more suspicious. I have an account with BOA so logged in and realized that I had two new accounts opened. I did not do it, so called in and told them.

My former husband got a call to his line, my former  land line allegedly for credit check. I have not requested this… A scam?

After receiving this call, I called Bank of America's fraud department and confirmed that this was real.  Someone had tried to open a credit card account with my name.  I would encourage you to call BOA if you get this call.

We would never ask for any of your personal information. Bank of America is alerting you that someone is using your information.

I also received a call (Voicemail) from this number: 888-230-6262, a day after receiving an alert from my credit monitoring that I had a new inquiry added to my file. I called the number back and gave the reference number they left. I was asked for my name, They did not request any other personal information. I was then asked if I tried to open a credit card with BOA. I replied that I had not, She said that they would cancel the application and flag my account as having fraud attempted. She then gave me the contact info for the credit bureaus and told me to have a nice day.

Seems Legit to me.

This is a legitimate number for Bank of America's "New card application" fraud team.  I called BoA general customer service, explained that I got a message from them that included the here number, the name of the rep, and a card application reference number.  The agent I just spoke, who was not the one that left the message, to confirmed all the message's information was legitimate.

I received a letter stating they received a credit card application in my name and they were trying to verify the information and make sure that it was me who made the application.  The phone number was listed within the body of the letter.  I called and it was their fraud department.  Not a phish in this situation.

It is a legit call from Bank of America which I received after applying for credit card.  Interestingly, when I called Bank of America customer service, they told me that number is not from  Bank of America.  But when they transferred me to fraud department, representative confirmed that it is a number from Bank of America.

I got a letter in the mail from Bank of America saying an application had been put in in my name, and to call them to verify the information.  I had not put in an application, so I went and checked my credit report, and there was the credit inquiry right there (along with another inquiry for a personal loan company that I never made).  I called the number (888-230-6262) and it was in fact Bank of America's fraud department.  They got it resolved just by having me give them the reference number (never asked for my SSN) and let me know that they would take the inquiry off my credit report and note my account to watch for other applications to made in my name.

So my advice is don't ignore it.  Check your credit report if you are suspicious, but you sure don't want a fraudulent inquiry left on your credit report!
