BofA's numbers are 933-6262 or others (check their website) -- _not_ 231-6262.

Someone from this number called both my parents and my in-laws trying to get information regarding a credit card application that I had supposedly signed up for. I was told to call back and use a particular application number to finish the process. I never applied for a credit card! BEWARE!!

888-231-6262 is FIA Card Services. They help banks with processing credit card apps. Bank of America confirmed this is legit.  Story below:

Got a voicemail from a blocked #, so was suspicious at first. Called the 888 # (identified as "card services"), gave the reference # and was transferred to another woman. I had applied for a Bank of America credit card last Friday, and her call was to verify address information on my credit history. She asked me to fax back information to verify my address. I thought this was really strange, so I called the main BoA credit card # on their website, and was eventually transferred to the security department. BoA security guy was able to look up my application and the reference # given to me in the voicemail and confirm that in fact BoA did need to verify my address. He even gave me the same fax # that the first woman did.

I called back the first 888 # left in my voicemail and asked the call answerer to identify herself. She said she was part of FIA Card Services and they help banks with processing credit card apps. Seems like they are just an outsourcer and this number is legit.

Got a call on July 3 from Customer Protection Unit of Card Services saying she received request for credit in my name, asking me to call between 8-8 eastern time at 888-231-6262 and refer to ref # 263421478. I called the number after hours and a recorded voice said I had called Card Services (no indication of which card this is) and that my call couldn't be taken, then it hung up.

If you applied for a credit card recently, this is totally legit.  If you did NOT apply for a card, then somebody else did so in your name so you should consider a phone call from this number you should take it seriously - it might be your first warning that you are a victim of identity theft.  This is not a phising scam.

I applied for a Bank of America card and I have a consumer protection fraud alert on my credit report so that if credit is applied for in my name, the bank or their card processing agency (people from this phone number) have to call me and I have to convince them that I did, in fact, apply for the credit card and am not becoming another identity theft statistic.

My name is Fred and I work with BofA in the fraud department. I can assure you that this Is not a scam. I will explain the ENTIRE process to you now.

When someone applies for a credit card the first thing BofA does is approve or decline the application from a credit standpoint.. Then, if you're approved, the application goes through our "fraud strategies." in this process a computer checks to make sure that all of your personal info is matching the credit report we have on file for you. If everything matches, like your curent address, ssn, dob, mmn, phone numbers, we send the card no questions asked. If for instance something isn't matching, like your address, and we can't verify it we give you a call to make sure that you had applied and do indeed want your credit card sent to that address.  I will warn you that we get a lot of applications where the addresses don't match your current address on your credit file that turn out to be identity theft. So if you receive a call from this number it is in your best interest to take the call. We will not ask for any personal information other then an address. The only time we will consider asking for your SSN is if the SSN we have on your application does not match the SSN on your credit report.. Otherwise we have no need to ask you for it.. But, once we verify all of your information we send you the card. If we verify that you did not apply we do educate you on what to do in this situation and also offer to have you speak with our victims assistance unit.. 

What makes this whole process seem so fishy is the fact that we refer to ourselves as "card serves." The reason why we do this is simple. BofA's fraud department is the top fraud dept in the world. We prevent more fraud then any other bank. So.. Smaller banks, like for instance Regions Financial, or first bank of puerto Rico, outsource their fraud prevention to bank of america. When we speak to customers from those banks we refer to those accounts as "transparent." and if we break transparency or refer to ourselves as BofA while talking to a regions cust we are charged heavy fines up to as much as much as $10,000 for breaking transparency. Therefore to make things easier we created our legal name "card serves." so if we recieve a call from a regions cust or a bofa cust we dont have to worry about breaking transparency. once you identify your ref num when you call in we will refer to ourselves from BofA. We just don't want to beak transparency.

Yes it a legit number.  I called Bank of America today and gave them this number.  He dialed it to confirm that it is their Fraud Protection unit.  I would want to make sure that it is a legit # before giving out my informations.

I took the same route called Bank of America main CS line @ 1-800-432-1000 today and gave them this number.  She dialed it to confirm that it is their Fraud Protection unit.  
Turned out some guy use my SSN applied a BofA credit card ... glad i took action imeediately.

This number is legit.  Someone tried to apply for a Bank of America credit card using my name and social security number.

This is absolutely a legit phone number. Had applied for a credit card aprox 24 hours prior to receiving this phone call. They did not ask for any highly personal info (Ssn or DOB). They do however verify the info that was given to them on the application. Then they asked a few questions like aprox how much were property taxes last year. Name one credit card you have and the aprox limit.

Best part of this phone call was the person actually spoke English as a first language! All sarcasm aside I am so sick of speaking to (India, and the Philippians) people I can hardly understand.

Just spoke with a very friendly lady who wanted to verify my address on a BoA credit card application that I submitted a few days ago. Not a scam or fraud, call was totally legit. Never asked to provide any sensitive personal information, only address and current card info to verify my identity to them.

It's legit, it's B of A fraud department just wanting to verify info for a loan or credit app. If you did or didn't file one it's in your best interest to answer. I applied for a credit card and they just wanted to verify my address because it is new and doesn't appear on my credit report.

Part of a massive fraud campaign targeting numerous financial institutions.  Note the pattern of shill postings all claiming they received a genuine call - an obvious giveaway.
