Called discover number on back of my credit card.  Initial customer service person did not recognize number.  Transferred me to security specialist who recognized the number as one of their dedicated security lines.  So this is actually Discover, much to my surprise. This started as a text I received.

Got a call from this number, which showed only "Toll Free Caller" as the name instead of Discover, which was already a red flag.  I contacted Discover thru their website's chat feature.  They assured me it was absolutely NOT one of their phone numbers.  Would suggest you block this number from getting thru (if your carrier or phone or software has away to do so).  Definitely a scam, impersonating Discover.

Just hung up from Discover (the number on the back of the card). This number is NOT discover related and is a scam to get your personal information.

I suspected a scam since I have recently been hacked.  All the numbers I answer to are in my address book, in paper, and I do not answer calls not in my paper notebook.  Period.

The phone number is not a scam.  if you don't have a Discover card, someone might be using real information to get you to reply to their text in effort to get you to voluntarily give them sensitive information, however, the phone number is real.  I called Discover Business to have a damaged card replaced.  Part of the process of verification was to send me a verification code, via text messaging.  I received the code with a note stating that if I did not make the request, I should call 1-888-251-8003.  This is a valid phone number for Discover Business Fraud department.  Please save the number and you can dial the fraud line direct instead of trying to wade through the menu choices when you call the number on the back of the card.  If you don't trust this message, by all means, use the number on the back of your card.

To "Jeff E", It's NOT a frickin' scam!!  This IS LEGIT Discover!  Yes, they DO INDEED have more than ONE phone #!  Yes, they DO INDEED text OR call to send a verification code via this # for some websites where you would be ordering!  Every frickin' time I try and use my Discover card at the a$$hole HomeDepot website, I am BLOCKED by HD, PREVENTED from placing the order thanks to this overzealous "verification" bullschitt.  If you opt for the phone call instead of the email, they will call and send a so-called "verification code" to you then you are SUPPOSED to put it on your checkout page, but there's NO WHERE ON the checkout page to put the frickin' code Discover sends!!  If you opt for the email, then DISCOVER NEVER SENDS the frickin' email!  (So every time I have to order from HD, I'm forced to use PayPal!  The irony is, I use the EXACT SAME DISCOVER CARD with PayPal!!)

Received a call from this number stating to call back about a charge on the account.  My husband called 1-800-discover and was told it was not a legitimate Discover number.

I see claims of both "It is valid" and "It is not valid" here.
My experience has been that it is a valid Discover number.
Starting a few months ago, every time I make a purchase at Best Buy's website I am presented with a pop-up informing me that Discover will send me a verification number that I have to enter to complete the purchase.  This is the phone number that the call comes in on.

While the calls I have received are from Discover, there is always the possibility that Scammers know of its connection to Discover and may spoof it in hopes of phishing information from people.
If you have a Discover card and have any doubts about the call, hang up and call the number on the back of your card.  If you do not have a Discover card, block the number and be done with it.

I'm seeing conflicting information here that this is legit Discover number / that it is scam.  I don't doubt that this number is a legit Discover number.  However, note also that they would not cold-call you and ask you for your information.  Be very wary if they ask for your personal identifiable information (PII) such as your credit card number, your date of birth or social security number if you haven't initiated the call.  Now, if it's text message for a legit transaction you made, well, that's another story.  So, in my situation, since they cold-called me without leaving a message (I'm not expecting any calls from them), I'm going to file it under "scam suspicion" under "probably a spoofed number."

Caller ID showed "Toll-free caller." I don't answer those. No message was left, so I assumed it was another robocall/scammer.
