- Jim Burton| 1 replyCalled HSBC and verified that the call was legit.
Any time this happens, call the source bank and verfiy and call the 888-289-3585 and confirm information. They never asked for private information other than the last 4 digits of the SSN (I'm OK with that). - DaveMy mum got a message on her answering machine today requesting that she call the HSBC Something and Fraud Department at 1-888-289-3585, during certain hours in the Central Time Zone, regarding suspicious activity on her account. I came here to check the number out and told her that while it appeared to be legit, if I were her, I'd 'phone the card issuer using the number on the back of the card. She did that, and the fellow on the line told her that that was not a known number; further, that there had been _no_ activity on her account.
My advice would be to 'phone your card issuer using the number on the back of the card. - Bob of USAThe phone number is legit. However, I called the HSBC phone number that is on the back of my CC and the rep said the 888-289-3585 is from HSBC. They had put a hold on an online purchase to ensure that I indeed made the purchase. He knew the vendor and the amount. He also asked if I had the card in my possession.
Aside from this episode, be aware there are phone scams that are of a similar nature. If you call the number on your voice mail, the first thing the rep wants is your credit card number. They are very slick and somewhat convincing when they ask but don't be fooled. I responded with, "Well if you are my cc company, you can look up my account by name and address." They also asked for my full SS#. Baloney! I raked the rep over the coals and told him I was reporting his number, which I did. Just be very careful and think what your doing, before you do it. Don't become your own worse enemy. - Mitch - WA| 1 replyIt is legit. I used my HSBC card for the first time in almost 9 months for a pretty big online transaction. Within 5 hours a call came in from HSBC Fraud department to verify the transaction. (from this number 888-289-3585) They said they put a hold on my account. Verified my identity (acount # and last 4 digits of SS and mothers maiden name) and they asked if I had made the purchase online and gave me the online companies name. Keep in mind if it was a fraud they would ask for your expiration date and the 3 digits from the back. NEVER give that out.

- Ruth Martin replies to Jim BurtonThis man works for Capital One Bank. He is calling at odd hours like Sunday mornings and hours when people don't expect creditors to call. This is the same man who has called me for years wanting to argue. He presumes I'm stupid in spite of having been a Chapter 13 Bankruptcy Trustee during my work years. Now retired, he is trying to prove I owe Capital One money. He has called into the Credit Bureau to find my present creditors, got my phone number pretending to be HSBC. This is highly illegal. It is falsifying and misrepresentation of his company along with the company he's lying about being.
I have put a fraud alert on my credit reports as he had to remove his fraudulent bill off my credit as the statute of limitations expired. Creditors can wait 6 months and put it back on; however, the new credit law has eliminated that 6 months. By putting the fraud alert on my credit reports, I forced his hand against being dealt with by the credit bureau.
My warning to all of you: DO NOT RETURN THE PHONE CALL!!!!! This is the advice of an attorney as well as a previous Chapter 13 Bankruptcy Trustee. If you do, you have entered his arena instead of you keeping the ball in your court. - Ruth Martin replies to JOE LILLYDO NOT CONTACT THIS PERSON. HE IS COMMITTING FRAUD AS HE IS REPRESENTING A COMPANY HE DOES NOT WORK FOR. HE WORKS FOR ANOTHER COMPANY AS A COLLECTOR. THIS IS IS SCAM TO MAKE CONTACT TO COLLECT. THIS IS FRAUD AGAINST YOU, HSBC, AND THE CREDIT BUREAUS.
PUT A FRAUD ALERT ON YOUR CREDIT REPORT. PLEASE PROTECT YOURSELF!!!!!! - RUTH MARTIN replies to Mitch - WAPLEASE DO NOT FALL FOR THIS TECHNIQUE AGAIN. I BET YOU HAVE A CAPITAL ONE ACCOUNT AS WELL. THIS PERSON IS NOT AN HSBC FRAUD PERSON, BUT A CAPITAL ONE COLLECTOR. HE IS COMMITING FRAUD AGAINST HSBC, YOU AND THE CREDIT BUREAUS. THIS IS ILLEGAL. THREATEN TO SUE!
- OliverI called the number on the back of ny card and they said that I must be calling about the fraud call I received today. They didn't ask for anything but the last 4 of my social and my mother's maiden name. They put my card on hold because of a new charge to Netflix which I have not used this card in months. They said that who ever had tried to use it kept giving a wrong exp date. He didn't ask for the expiration date on my card just said it was closed and a new card would be sent to me in 7-10 days.
It is part fo HSBC.- Caller: HSBC
- smartconsumer, stupidaccountHSBC is the worst! Yes that is their legit number but I didn't give them anything because the first thing out of their mouths were to request my social security number (not last fouir digits) and credit card number! I hung up and called HSBC directly and they confirmed but I complained of their idiotic customer service. HSBC rep stated they were not supposed to ask the full social security number and it was the operator error. I swear that if it didn't affect my credit score I would close that account up so fast!!
