SCAM.  This number originates from an elaborate scam and has been reported to identify theft authorities (FTC).  Please do not provide any personal information over the phone, especially your social security number as this is routinely requested by this scam.  When I say elaborate, I mean it.  This scam and the originators have been around for a while and have developed a complex automated voice system with real operators trained to mimic legitimate banking and credit inquiries.  Currently they mimic Discover and Capital One telephony systems.  They are even quick to respond to posts that call them out.  Put a credit alert on your account immediately.  The current (as of 2/4/2011) sister number to this scam is 866-927-7875.  This number will take you to their Capital One line.

We got a letter appearing to be from Discover stating that an application with our information was recently submitted and they want to verify more information.  The letter directed us to call 888-337-7253.  The letter looks VERY legit but something didn't seem right so I called discover at the number on their website.  We had no accounts or pending applications under our names or ssn.  So for grins I called the number and it has a recording that sounds like you're calling discover.  A lady came on shortly after asking for the reference number on the letter.  When we read it to her twice, she then says "it's not pulling up, can i have your SSN?".  Right then I knew it was a scam.  I just hung up on her and called discover.  

They didn't seem too concerned but I know people will fall for this because everything looks legit on the surface.  Hopefully people who get this will google the number and find this information.

This is a Discover card number for verification of the application you sent in. A few questions about the information on the app. Very courtesy and professional.

I called Discover directly, 800-Discover, and pressed # and then 0 to get a hold of a live account manager for application status.  Got to talk to a account manager, I was asked what I was calling for and I told them about a "correspondence call".  I was asked for my phone number and I was told of who called me.  It was a courtesy call about my application.  Very nice customer service experience and it was legit.  

My suggestion, just call Discover and you can verify or cancel.

Seems legit to me. They called me one day after I submitted a Discover application and the woman on the other end asked a few questions and approved my account. She did NOT ask for SSN or Other CC #s. I vote not a scam, but it's possible that someone is making calls with spoofed caller ID.

I got a call from this number today saying they were from the Discover credit card company needing more info on me. They asked for my birthday & without thinking I gave it to them. Then I got that feeling in my got that something wasn't right. So I hung up & searched for Discover on the internet. I found several telephone numbers for them. I called 2 of them & asked about the status of my application & about the phone call from this scam number. They told me they have several numbers for different departments. They said my app had went through & told me what my limit would be & I will be receiving the card in a few days. Tonight at 12:05 am I got an email from this scam number saying I need to call them to verify info. I'm wondering if Discover is a fraud company. I'm searching everything about this company.

Got the same operator voice call this week.  Left a fake message and this number to call back to "answer my questions."
I reported it to Discover.

I just called the discover, they said they do not have the number 888-337-7253 in the company, may be it is scam.

Received a message from another number claiming to be Discover and to call back at this number. To be careful, I called Discover to see if the number was legit, and they said they had neither number in their database. I would avoid it.

Was instructed to call this number by a Discover support rep that I contacted through Discover's online customer support chat ("Live Chat"). Provided name and date of birth to verify my application, wasn't asked for anything else.

After filling out an online application with Discover Card.  Number 888-337-7253 pops up to call providing a reference number.  Was a bit nervous about this number.  When googling, comes up as a scam.  I Then called Discover 800-347-2683 and the person called the number I provided and confirmed it was a legit Discover Card office.   I am still a bit suspect and will watch my account as well as ssn for any weird behavior or new credits I have not applied for.

just got a call on our answering machine saying they were from discover and wanted to talk to me.  i was given a different number to call them,right away i think scam. looked it up and yes its a scam. glad i dont answer phone and look up numbers now to check. if different number to call back,i dont. i automatically know its a scam.

It is a SCAM. Do not provide any personal information. I received a call and they asked my for my brother. They wanted to speak with him regarding to Discover Credit Card Application submitted. I was pretty sure that he never applied for it because He was out of town and He had a medical condition that prevented him from getting it.

Got a call from this number regarding "JP Morgan Bank" - in a language I do not speak. NOT Discover. SCAM. See comment below!

I applied for a discover it card and received a call from this number the following day. The person only asked my name and birthday, told me the limit they were giving me then said the card will arrive in 5 to 7 days. I got the impression discover was trying to make sure there wasn't anything nefarious taking place
