- cdcReceived a phone message to call 888-419-7586. When I tried to call I was told the number had been disconnected. Is this a scam?

- Jonny Taylor| 5 repliesThis is a legitimate Census Bureau number. For all you people with doubts why don't you just call the Census Bureau Headquarters in Suitland, Maryland and verify these numbers with them- I dare you- I dare all of you infantile conspiracy theorists to call the headquarters. Most of you already know that you filled out the ACS and left some questions blank-so you ought to know you should be expecting a call from them. Americans are getting more stupid by the minute.
- Roscoe Bookbinder| 1 replyWorking at the Census Bureau as a telephone interviewer has made me hate people and become a recluse. Some of the people we talk to are the rudest most hate filled people I've ever encountered. I never realized that there were so many rude and hateful people in America since I became a telephone interviewer. Sometimes I wish we were able to curse some of you out and hang up on you even though that's not my nature. If you're miserable and hateful-do us a favor and just don't answer the darn phone when we call.Hell awaits a lot of you hateful [***].
- TOMThis # is not listed with Census Bureau
- Thanks Census Bureau| 1 reply1-888-419-7586... Is a legit number! There are 3 call centers that complete interviews; Smallest located in Hagerstown,MD followed by Tucson,AZ and the largest located in Jeffersonville,IN. All 3 centers are on a branch service all 3 centers record the same number because once you return the call it's directed to an interviewer that is available for an incoming call. This number 888-419-7586 is used for contacting households who returned a long form they were mailed. Now once the form was received back from the household there were either blanks or scanners were unable to read things which is why you received a call from that number. Now 1-888-817-2153 is ALSO a legit Census Bureau number that number is for households that wish to complete by phone or if Household does not mail back long form the home will get a call questioning the form and if it had not been mailed they offer the phone interview as a way to complete. These numbers can be verified on WWW.Census.gov and ALL KINDS of information about all the surveys and statistics, how it's used, what the long form looks like, why certain questions are asked. You may not even realize how much the Census Bureau actually does. I got educated with a lengthy chat and the website. I suggest you do the same. They were very helpful.

- Smart American replies to Jonny Taylor| 1 replyHey Johny Taylor, in this day and age of identity theft and fraud and scams run amok, it's better to be safe than sorry. So relax. If you're such a trusting soul, why don't you post your credit card numbers, social security number, and other personal info here and just trust that no one will try to use it.
You *sshole. - Haha go Jonny replies to Smart AmericanHa you must not realize the amount of idiotic theories people come up with about the reason for collecting data, some people I want to ask " Are you SERIOUS!?" I mean seriously thebdata we collect is for your benefit and none of the data requested even links to your identity you can do it w.o your name and we don't request ssn's. I wish people could comprehend we honestly could careless about you as a person we just want the data haha we don't need your face or a person to even put with the data. Some don't understand and they are the people I sit on mute and laugh with my neighbor about because they come up with the wildest stuff!, like cooome on stfu with the b.s!!
- jb replies to Roscoe BookbinderWe fill out the form in good faith and then get a call to go over the form again. It is our time that is being wasted. You are getting paid, BY US. If your scanners did not pick up all the information, why do you not go get the copy and update it yourself, rather than bothering us for the 3rd time on this census. If you need the number of people, as the census was to first be for, count the people paying taxes, then the ones collecting social security etc. Bingo you know how many people are in the U.S. and where they live.
- Not your business replies to Jonny TaylorIt is my phone and I will determine who I take calls from, and who I call. I will also determine who I give information to. This is not infantile or conspiracy based. This is my business and my decisions.
- No Name or DOB replies to Thanks Census BureauNo where on the census.gov website does that phone number appear. Even the search engine doesn't find it. If the survey was sent to a random address then why do they need my full name, DOB and income. All of the info I felt was too invasive is available at the IRS. Seems like this survey is redundant and just a way of keeping more government workers employed.
- Not An Easy Target1-888-419-7586 is NOT a listed U.S. Census Bureau number (as per the U.S. Census Bureau website). Hagerstown is 1-800-392-6975, Jeffersonville 1-800-523-3205 and Tucson 1-800-642-0469. I called my official regional census bureau directly and, they are doing their own research on the mysterious 1-888-419-7586 number.
- Caller: U.S. Census Bureau
- TerryI called the Hagerstown call center. They verified the phone number 1-888-419-7586. They looked up the case number I found on my answering machine and verified that it was a valid case. Not only that, they knew when the calls were made to my phone. So I called 1-888-419-7586 and the lady who helped me knew details about a survey I took that only the Census Bureau would know.
But I have also gotten phone calls from scammers. It would be an easy scam for people to claim they are from the Census Bureau and then pry personal identifiable information from a victim. If you are not sure the phone call is from the Census Bureau, BY ALL MEANS CALL THEM TO VERIFY THE NUMBER!- Caller: U.S. Census Bureau
- Call type: Survey
- malcolmxy replies to Jonny Taylorsock puppet.
Why would anyone who doesn't have skin in the game care about this as much as you obviously do? Why would the US Census Bureau not just leave their main, easily verifiable main, 800# call center main number when they wanted people to return their calls for this survey.
I have completed no census long form and I continuously get these calls.
If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's probably [***]. - WillaGood number. You can verify on the census website: http://www.census.gov/about/npc/identify-interviewer.html
- Caller: Census
- Call type: Survey
- JGH replies to Jonny TaylorI called the Census Bureau at the 800-923-8282 number given on their website to verify is 888-419-7586 a valid Census Bureau call, and they referred me to a regional office. When I called them, they said they had no record of 888-419-7586 being one of theirs. The problem with calling unknown parties is that there are so many scammers preying on unsuspecting folks, eager to get personal info. or fleece the victim financially. That's a fact, unfortunately, not a conspiracy theory. I figure if it's truly from the Census Bureau, they'll send a mail notice, requesting a callback.
