Well, I fell for it.  I knew it didn't feel right, but since it had been 4 years... my ex-husband got a call from these people who purport to be Johnson York LLC, about a pay day loan from back in 2008. So I called them back.  Payday loan origination date, according to them, was 03/28/2008, which I knew wasn't right, company name Ace Cash.  Anyway, I did the unthinkable and paid over the phone.  STUPID, STUPID, STUPID!  I KNOW BETTER!  Now the only think I know to do is to cancel my debit card and open another checking account.  Can't believe I fell for this... I AM A PARALEGAL FOR GOD'S SAKE!!!

A man called and left a message saying he was Howard Thomas, trying to reach me to serve me legal papers for a bad check. Since he could not contact me he would be serving me papers either at my residence or my place of employment. He also stated "this serves as notice" If I wanted to contact the "plaintiff in this case" I could still call 888-688-9470 and reference a 6 digit number.

UPDATE:  After serious misgivings about caving in and making payment on a payday loan I was 99.99% sure I didn't owe, I went to my bank and discussed the situation with my bank officer.  We did some further investigation (called the creditor corporate office) which revealed the information about the "debt" was a lie, and that illegal tactics were used (i.e.,threats of legal action, pending arrest/lawsuit,  if payment not made, etc.).  Bottom line: I have put in a reversal on the payment and I have filed a complaint with the FTC.  I have also signed up with the "do not call" registry.
