This is a fake law firm that uses scare tactics to try and collect old debts. They will threaten to file charges with the sheriff or courthouse. They request that you return their call to this number so that they can 'advise' you of the charges. It is against the law for a debt collector to threaten legal action when they do not intend to follow through. I filed a report against them today.

I was called by these people today. Who did you report them to?

I reported them to my state Attorney General's office (go to www.naag.org) and the Federal Trade Commission (www.ftc.gov).

This is a legitimate law firm....I received a call the other day and I ignored them.....but today I received a summons to appear in court in regards to a law suite......now I can't settle the case and I have over 1000 dollars in court costd to pay!!!!!!!!!

I received five calls from the telephone number, AND they called my 75 year old Mother and scared her to near death with threats that the sheriff is after her and after me, even though we live in two different states.  I've reported them to each State's AG, and the FTC, and am filing a local complaint against them with my own County Sheriff Dept for harassment and attempted assault.

He called himself "MR JONES" from the law firm of Brownstein Shaw Associates. When you look up that law firm, there is NO LAW firm with this name.

And of course, they don't provide any information.

This kind of stuff really needs to stop.

"Regretfull," is your name Mr. Jones? This is a collections company that is posing as a law firm. I'm really concerned that they are going to reach a lot of people who will fall for this scam not knowing their rights. "Mr. Jones" said that they are based in Alabany, NY. The office of the New York Attorney General confirms that there is no such law firm and they will be investigating this company. I'm glad that the internet is such a great resource for the public to educate themselves about scammers like this.

I received the same call today from a Mr. Meyers who stated he was calling from Bronstein, Shaw and Assoc and that I needed to call him back ASAP at 888-701-0360 ext.475.  He left a message stating he was calling about check fraud and that they had filed a case/ charges against me in the county I live in. The funny thing is, I work for the county and there is no case against me. Now that I am reading all this, I really know it's a scam or scare tactic to get someone to pay a debt.  I plan to call them tomorrow to see what info I can get from them. I will also be requesting them to send me paperwork on whatever it is they are calling about.  So we'll see what happens

Ha! Let us know what you find out county employee! And don't forget to report this to the Federal Trade Commission using their easy online form at ftccomplaintassistant.gov.  Debt collections companies like this are being made to pay millions of dollars in civil penalties after violating the Fair Debt Collections Act. The FTC is the federal agency that enforces these laws, but they can't take action unless they receive reports from the victims.

maybe instead of complaining about what these collection agencies are saiding you try owning up to your obligation to paid it back you know ya took the loan out so just paid it back if you didnt avoid these peoples calls maybe they wouldnt have to say the things they do to get you on the phone. you ple are the reason our country is in a recession pay your bills! who knows maybe you might be able to get a car loan house or etc. you all say the same thing knowing damn well it was obtained by you they have all the proof your SSN  email address, bank name as well as acct number. BTW these agencies do have legal offices that do seek civi;l judgments against debtors who REFUSE TO PAY

I talked to Mr. Jones on the phone and he pretty well had me convinced. He was very professional sounding and respectful. I was in the process of scraping together the money to pay the debt when he called my ex-husband and told him that I was being investigated for a lawsuit. My ex called and warned me that it might be a scam and told me to do some research. After not being able to find any trace of a real law firm with this title, I was suspicious. And, after reading the posts on this site, I was very relieved. If I had pulled together the cash to pay that debt, I probably wouldn't have been able to make May's rent. I'm a full-time nursing student trying to make a better life for my kids. When I took out the payday loan, I sincerely intended on paying the debt but I wasn't able to. Let's hope Mr. Jones and Mr. Meyers can use their intelligence to move onto a more respectable career. :)

youre stupid!!! you dont even know what you are talking about..these ppl are scammers i know first hand bc i paid my loan and they are still harassing me 1 year later..so stfu cuz you dont know ppls situations and what went on take your judgements and criticisms to another website...DUMBASS

So my sister-in-law just got a call from this number/firm. They were calling her about me but had my name wrong as well as my address wrong. I wonder what in the world they are trying to do. I'm watching all of my accounts closely. I'm about to turn them into the Attorney General.

Ya ive got two phone calls from them now threatening me telling me i have all these charges against me being filed unless i get in contact with them immediately.....i tried looking them up too and nothing!

Brownstein, Shaw & Associates...Rennee Williams called me from 1-888-701-0360 Ext 473.  Actually they did NOT call me, but my Grandparents house, and left a long detailed message with my name and "case #" saying for me to call back today to avoid legal action.  My Grandparents are in their 80's and in ill health.  This message caused my Grandma especially to become very upset and almost had an anxiety attack over the situation because she thought that I, (her GrandDaughter) was in legal trouble due to financial situations.  I am very upset because they caused my Grandparents emotional distress...and also left personal information about me on an answering machine at a number that does not even belong to me.  They do not leave the name of the company in the message or when they answer the phone...then, when you return the call, they tell you that you are being charged with "defrauding a financial institution, and theft of goods and services", and threaten you before they ever tell you who they are or let you get any words in.  I referred them to my Attorney, and they no longer wanted to speak with me....Hmmmmm!!??  Wonder why not??

they called themselves gordon and Cass instead in my message. i will be filing a complaint against them as well. I used to work in collections and know ha it is illegal for them to threaten legal action if they do not plan to do so.

Does anyone have an address  or fax # to send a cease & desist letter to? I am a TEACHER and was called in my classroom, DURING class by "Bronstein, Shaw & Associates"!

I am now getting several calls from this Mr. Jones at Brownstein, Shaw & Assoc. Phone number is 877-863-5647, ext. 493. I have yet to get in touch with him. Each time I call, it sounds like I go through three different lines before I'm able to leave a message. I don't even know if this is a US-bound call. What legal options are there for such harassment?

Look who the loser is!!  Next you want to post something, make you use spell check.  If this a true collection debt and they have all of my information, SS#, bank accounts, etc, then you loser, they would know that I FILED BANKRUPTCTY LAST MONTH! AND A DEBT CANNOT BE COLLECTED FROM ME, FOR I AM PROTECTED UNDER THE BANKRUPTCY LAW!! LOSER

the ftc act has nothing to do with collection.think you need to get your facts right.and these websites arere for people who don't want to pay there bills.I got a a call from this company about a check and go loan from 2008 but my last payment was 2010 and I bounced the check.I would like this off my credit and I don't want to go to court for a bad check.I am also in collections and old debt or not it all matters on the statue of limitations in your state.you can be pursude up to a certain extent.so get your facts right and pay your bills
