- Melanie| 3 replies"John" called me from the "Microsoft Tech Center" or something to that effect, saying that my e-mail has been showing malicious virus and he wanted to show me how to take it off my computer. "John" did have a heavy accent (middle eastern?) and was difficult to understand at times. He asked me if I was in front of my computer. I said, "I might be". He wanted me to get on the computer and he would show me how to disable the viruses. I asked why my virus software wasn't finding it, discussed that I wasn't comfortable with getting on my computer and doing whatever he asked since I don't know him. Then I told him I didn't use Microsoft (true for my browser and e-mail) so he asked if I used Windows 7 or XP and I said I wasn't comfortable telling him, just to tell me how to find the virus myself, and he hung up. I believe this is some sort of scam.
- Rob replies to Melanie| 1 replyJust received a call from 888 810 0399. Middle eastern/indian guy saying he was from Microsoft and I needed to be on my PC as I had a virus. I told him to bugger off and hung up. Had a similar call about a month ago.....guy then told me I had a virus and I needed to get on my PC and to press the Windows key and the Control key at the same time......I hung up then
- Virginia ResidentI got the same call and when I called the number back I got a recording for some other company. I left a message stating I had recorded their call, calling the police and the BBB to report them calling and trying to scam me about computer problems.
- UmbersCaller ID just said "Toll Free Number".
My roommate got a call from this number yesterday from a guy claiming he was from Microsoft customer service, and trying to butter him up to buy some scam antiviral (I'm assuming - I wasn't on the phone, so I'm just going by what my roommate told me).
My roommate hung up, but when he called the number back, he said he got some power company in California. So, the number was obviously spoofed.
Not long after, though, his computer started messing up badly, so we're thinking whoever it was already had my roommates computer with a trojan or something, and was just waiting for a hang up. Wonder if he'll call back tomorrow, and say something like "Told you so."
BUT, we're just assuming the guy was already in the system. It literally could have just been bad timing, so please don't get freaked out that this will happen to you. Just in case it does, though, this is what we did - We disconnected my roommate from the net. I copied my antivirals and anti-malware for him to use, and I think we got it (save your antivirals on cd, so you can get to them if something does happen to your computer - we used SuperAntiSpyware, McAfee Stinger, Malwarebytes, Spybot SD, and AVG - ALL are free, and usually pretty good).
But, we won't know until he fires up the computer tomorrow. We also called the phone company, and let them know, incase there is a trojan or virus in the modem we use. - always misbehavini got a call from 888-810-0399 when i wasnt home - decided to call the number - when the bot finally picked up it stated to leave a message for "PROGRESS ENERGY ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGER PROGRAM" - others are saying there are indians calling about mal/spy ware on computers and they want to remotely help you get rid of it.......all i can say is [***] SCAMMERS!!!! THEY'RE [***] EVERYWHERE AND WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THEM!!!!!!
- Caller: progress energy electric vehicle charger program

- HeatherI got a call fom this number last night, The guy told me the story of my computer having a virus, if I could turn it on, blah blah blah. I kind of played along while I sat in my comfy chair, watching tv, going through the steps with him,
Guy: Do you see the windows button?
Me: yeah
Guy: click it
Me: okay
Guy: do you see My Computer
Me: yeah
Guy: click it and then click drive
Me: How do you know its this computer, since I have two running right now?
Guy hung up on me
I figure if they tell me about a virus and get me to follow through with 'over the phone' instructions, then they should be able to tell me the computers identity.- Caller: Microsoft Tech Support
- JayI received a call from this number but had my hands full diapering the grandkid and couldn't answer. Called back about 5 mins later and a gentleman answered "Progress Energy". I told him I was returning his call and he politely told me that the number was them, but some scam was going on and using their number. He said that if the number came up again to not answer.
- MDJust received a call from this number on my work line! I couldn't understand the Indian sounding thick accent and asked him to repeat three times. I still couldn't understand much. I did catch that he was calling from the Microsoft Tech Company. What? He was calling to let me know that they're watching my computer and see a virus on it and he needs me to get in front of my computer to help me clean it up. For fun I made him keep repeating it because there was no way this was my helpdesk. Then finally I said well obviously your records are incorrect because my laptop is dead. Honestly my personal laptop is dead and my work one is completely protected. He hung up. Jerks!
- Caller: Microsoft Tech Company (allegedly)
- playdateI got the call yestrday evening from a guy with a VERY heavy foreign accent. All I could understand was "your computer has a virus and I'm going to HELP you" and that he saw I had a bad email or something. He wanted me to "get in front of" my computer, so I told him my computer is not turned on, and I'm not going to turn it on for him to do ANY thing.. He said he would call back tomorrow, but so far he hasn't, and I hope he doesn't.

- jrcJust had a call similar to all the ones described above, same number, same "Microsoft Windows" fake id, same virus cleanup claim. I said, "oh, you mean you're going to ask me to give you information about my computer and then hack it?" He hung up. There had been a lot of loud music in the background at the beginning of the call, by the way,
- Caller: claimed to be Microsoft Windows
- Call type: Prank
- SandyI received a call today identified by caller id as Harry Watson 805-773-8844. I missed the call but checked online and found it to be a valid number for this name but didn't pursue it any further. Two hours later I received a call from a toll free number 888-810-0399. The caller identified himself as Harry Watson (very heavy accent). He said my computer was sending my personal information all over the world and if I would sit down in front of it he would walk me thru how to stop it. (Really?). I told him that my son takes care of my computer, that I don't do any of that and he would have to call back when he was home. The caller hung up.
- Donyea, i got the same virus / spyware speech, when i told him i use linux, he hung up on me
