They called my house.    I called them back and they said they were Alliance One, looking for some woman with a Latino-sounding name.    

I looked Alliance One up online and they're a debt collector.   You know, I have had only one credit card and one credit/debit card in the last seven years.   The credit card I paid and closed a year ago because they kept making errors.   The credit/debit card is from my old employer and they've been super - except for one instance in which they discovered that their data had been compromised so they just cancelled everyone's card and overnighted a new one, but didn't tell them, leaving a 12 hour gap when you didn't have a card.   This would have given me a heart attack if I'd tried to use it.  But other than that, super.    Anyway, I lived at the same address for more than four years after paying in full, and closing, the two 0% cards I had back in '05.   The accounts were paid in full and I never heard from my actual former creditors ever.  

In late 2009 I moved to NYC, where they make it difficult to collect a VALID debt  (I was a commercial credit workout manager in NYC for 2 years).    A year after THAT, I started to occasionally get calls or letters from people claiming to be collecting on old debt, some with the same creditors but very different account info than actual (dates, living addresses), and some for people I'd never heard of, some with my name spelled wrong and/or personal info wrong - the one with my name spelled wrong there could be a real account to a real guy with that name, but I doubt it, since they have an address that is in the business district in my old city (nobody lives there) - bottom line it looks like these people randomly search Lex-Nex or some other database and call people with made-up debts and try to get you to give them your account info or send them money.   You tell them you're not giving them money and don't want to talk to them, they usually stop - then 6 months later someone else calls.    WTF why are they allowed to run these scams???
