I received a partial pre-recorded message from this company today. At the end of the recording they provided the following information:

I did a Google search on the address, and it came up as Portfolio Recovery Associates.

There are a LOT of reports about them being Fraudulent, and producing phony affidavits, etc.

HOW can companies like this be in existence?? I will be filing a complaint with the FTC and with the BBB about this!

I hope others will file reports as well! These types of practices need to be stopped!

Who are these people???

How they got his number is the puzzle. I did a test and never gave this number to anyone and is unlisted. They are using the Do Not Call list they have to subscribe to illegally to gather numbers. They never leave a name of who they are calling for. Last year I filed an FTC complaint as they slipped up and gave a name which was not me by the way. Scumbags at the worst. Report them to the FTC.

Portfolio recovery. How did they get my cell number? They have called for over 2 years now about a home water system that we do not have!

You are right, they are the scum of the earth and a collection agency.  I also cannot understand how they get a cell number when you are on a no call list, or even change your numbers they end up calling.  I have had calls at all times of the day, if I do not recognize the number I do not answer and they never leave a message.  I can only think of the Bankruptcy filed back in 2001 and all  my accounts have either been settled or paid in full.  This fully explained with documentation back then and they still call demanding a payment on an account that does not exist.  Be aware of them.

Somehow got my cellphone number. Add this number to the other numbers listed here and put on your reject list if your phone will allow you to do this.  This is a debt collector trying to collect on old charged off debts. Calls all hours of the day and night and has to regard for the rules that debt collectors are required to follow.

debt collector?  I owe no-one, have NO unpaid bills from any time/ any where.  From what I've read, they wouldn't understand it if I told them they must have a wrong #.  I don't answer any call if I don't know the #, guess I'll continue with that.

I, too, have gotten so many calls from these people. using so many different numbers it's ridiculous. And, like everyone else, we have no collections in place. They have called us at all hours, from 06:30 AM to 10:00PM at night. My husband has answered quite a few and tells them in his ever so colorful language, to not call back.  It stops for a very short time, then picks back up. And, like everyone else, I have reported it, I've sent them copies of the regulations, and I don't know what else, (my brain goes into freeze mode), and we still get calls.

They call me and never leave a message.  And of course when I do a reverse phone search there is "no information found".  I never answer the phone when a strange number calls me anyway.

They call and then hang up. It's very irritating.

I receive many calls daily from numbers that are not recognizable that I have found listed on this and other web sites as Portfolio Recovery.  This practice has gone on for months nows.  Finally today for the first time someone left a message for an individual that I do not know and it isn't me.  So I will now begin to block calls.  Thanks for the information.

Portfolio Recovery Breaks All Kinds of Records with Q2 Results

Debt buyer Portfolio Recovery Associates, Inc. (Nasdaq: PRAA) late Thursday reported financial results for the second quarter of 2011 marked by record-high net income, cash collections, and revenue.

The Norfolk, Va.-based accounts receivable management firm reported net income of $25.6 million for the second quarter of 2011, up 31 percent from the same period a year ago. Earnings per share were $1.48 in the second quarter, up 30 percent from Q2 2010. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected the company to report earnings of $1.41 per share in the quarter.
The jump in cash collections drove total revenues for the quarter up 23 percent to a record $114.8 million. PRA’s fee-for-service businesses generated revenues of $14.5 million in the second quarter of 2011, a decline of 10 percent from the same period a year ago due largely to a decrease in revenues generated by PRA Location Services. Together, the fee-for-service businesses accounted for 12.6 percent of the company’s overall revenues in Q2 2011, down from 17.3 percent a year ago.
“This outstanding performance reflects the efforts of our entire PRA staff, including the Company’s more than 1,500 call-center collectors,” said Steven D. Fredrickson, chairman, president and CEO. “I’m proud of the hard work and dedication of our very talented team and look forward to our future successes.”

PRA purchased $1.41 billion of face-value debt during the second quarter of 2011 for $89.5 million. The debt was acquired in 76 portfolios from 10 different sellers.

“The company purchased $89.5 million of charged-off debt in the second quarter, bringing our total purchases for the first half of the year to $197.4 million,” said Kevin P. Stevenson, chief financial and administrative officer. “Importantly, we were able to accomplish this while paying down $40 million in principal on our line of credit during the quarter, strengthening our ability to continue making smart investments in the future.”

For the second quarter, Portfolio Recovery reported a total employee headcount of 2,504, up very slightly from the first quarter of 2011 but representing a 5.5 percent increase from the second quarter of 2010.
