They phoned me at 8:30am on a Saturday morning. I didn't get to it in time to yell at them. Apparently it is an Oregon area code. I think this number has called me a few times now, but never that early on a weekend morning..no message left.

Caller ID showed TOP GOOGLEPAGES - call was from an East Indian, probably from an India call center. Told me that he was working for Windows operation system and that they had evidence that my computer was infected with viruses. He wanted me to enter TECNOHELP.ORG on my computer and they would help me. It's some kind of phony deal; I only stayed with him long enough to find our what his schtick was, then hung up. I have complete virus and malware checks, so he was obviously trying some scam.

caller id:  TOP GOOGLEPAGES, after I said hello there were a few seconds of silence, then a very annoying loud beep and an automated good-bye.

    HaHA!
I received many call of this type in the past year...they were calling every few days. I decided to 'play' along with their story...they caught on about 10-15 mins in the call. Other times I would just tell them that I have a Mac and not a PC (Windows).

It's funny when they're the ones that hang up first! lol

many thanks JD.  We're on Vanouver Island, off the west coast of British Columbia. Called them back, and using their voice instructions, added our number to their "do-not-call" list. Info provided indicated this will take 24  hours to complete.

I received a call 8/9/12. Same story as others. Silence on the other side and then they hang up. I called back from a different number. They say press 1 to be "removed from this company's do not call list". My guess is the return calls ensures you will get a telemarketing calls from this outfit.

I live in Ontario Canada - this is a US number - I guess our Do Not Call Registry doesn't work for numbers originating south of the border - not that it appears these clowns would comply anyhow...  How do they even get our numbers and how do we get them to stop?

This is the Microsoft Scam calling - from Kalkota, India.   They are trying to convince you that your event viewer on your XP shows that you need their expensive fix.
Definitely a scam for sure - and they are based in India using internet calling to show a Oregon number instead of India number.

Actually, yes it is. 971 is the cell phone overlay to 503.  If you're in the 541 area code, 458 does the same thing.

We received an obvious spoof call from this number today at 13:35 EDT. Same garbage as below regarding a supposed system infection "for long time" etc.

I just received a call from this number to my mobile phone. The caller had an Oregon accent and called me by my first name. He introduced himself as David, but the line went fuzzy and I couldn't understand when he said the name of the company. I said I couldn't hear him and could he repeat himself, then the line went dead. He didn't call back.

Uh, Bev, you might want to do a little research.  The 971 area code has been around since 1999.  It covers the same territory as the 503 area code.  Here's a link with details.

We got illegally charged by this company and had to fight it for months. We do not know how they got our number, our credit card number. We were credited, and now we're getting calls AGAIN from them, it's disgusting this nation has NO SECURITY for this kind of thing it seems like. Anyway, they called us this morning on Thanksgiving which is how we recognized (they changed the number from "8" on the last digit to "4" fyi) that this was some serious b.s....and hung up.

When is the USA going to put a stop to all this FRAUD going on is what I want to know............Sorry, but I'm rather sick of India calling me every other day....waking my ass up on my morning to sleep in, waking my mother etc...This is nothing more than phone harassment and it should be 'sue-able' worthy, maybe then these people will stop swindling Americans into giving out their information. The elderly are particularly vulnerable to this kind of activity. It's embarrasing we cannot even control a phone call coming in from another nation, how we're supposed to prevent foreign threats is going to be interesting- they've all but pretty much gone techno on our [***] and we let it continue b/c we have no skilled workers in this nation anymore thanks to our educational system being out of date...I'll stop the babble rabble now./..blech. Lovely to get this on Thanksgiving right?!
