I called the number on the back of my Am Ex card and asked about 623 492 6031.

It is DEFINITELY an Am Ex number.  It's part of their security department, and in my case they were trying to verify my information because I've been moving around and gave them a brand new phone number on an application for a new card.

Got a call from this number.  Gentleman spoke clear English.  He knew my name and account balance.  Even though my account is in good standing, he offered to settle it for about 95% of the balance.  My card would be frozen for about two weeks and my credit limit would be reduced.  I said to send it to me in writing.  When the letter arrives, I will verify it through AMEX and likely pay them off.  They must still be in financial trouble and trying to decrease exposure and get rid of less profitable accounts.  My original credit limit on this card was 25K.  Will now be down to 6K

This is a valid American Express number for their security group - message left said there was a fraud alert placed on my account.  I logged into my online AmEx account and there was a fraud alert notice there as well.  Called the 800 number on my card and had it cleared.  Planning a trip to Hawaii and all the hotel / travel reservations threw up a red flag as unusual activity.

I believe this is a scam to get your Amex card number or SSN. I called the Amex number on my card and Amex rep said they would never ask for a card number. They advised me not to provide ANY personal information to the caller from this number.
    • Caller: Sain it was American Express

Got a call from this #.. asked what it was about and the lady wouldnt answer me unless I gave a social.. then she hung up on me.. called back and a man said it was Amex Credit line.. and needed my social.. I declined to give it to him.. called Amex direct and they said they would never ask for a social, but they asked me for my acct # and since I canceled the card and cut it up Io didnt have it so she asked me for my social.. Declined to give it to her.. I thought they said they dont ask for it... I think It may be Amex, but If you have questions you should just call Amex direct to be safe.

I didn't answer the call because I didn't recognize the number.  I'm suprised to hear it has something to do with AMEX because I don't have an AMEX card and never have!

    Don't Be Scammed
SCAM CALLER!  This caller is a very scophisticated scam!  Even though your caller ID shows AMERICAN EXP, it's NOT AMERICAN EXPRESS, nor are they working for AMERICAN EXPRESS.  They're phishing, trying to get your personal information like account number, social security number, etc.  When they called they said I was overdue on my last payment.  I was immediately suspicious, because I hadn't yet activated my account, never used the card.  I told her this.  I then asked what were the last charges on the account and she rattled off some charges, then she asked for my social security number!   I hung up, then looked up the real AMERICAN EXPRESS customer service phone number on the internet and called them to explain what had just happened.  They confirmed my account hadn't been activated yet and that I had no charges.  They suggested I was being scammed and told me to be sure to never give my personal information over the phone to a incomming call like that.  When in doubt, you should always call the credit card company yourself using the credit card company's official customer service phone number listed on your card and on you bill.

    Don't Be Scammed!
This is a SCAM!  Even worse, there are comments being submitted on this web site by the scammer to make you think this is a real American Express phone number!  It's not!  I called Amreican Express customer service, described what this caller said and they confirmed that it wasn't a call from American Express!  So if you do get a call from them, tell them you'll call back through the real American Express Customer Service phone number, which is on you card, on your bill, or on the web.

They use "American Exp" as thier caller ID legally, because that's not the same as "American Express"

Don't be scammed by these people, they are very slick, very persistant.  Block their phone number using *60 - go to the AT&T website for instuctions on how to block incomming calls from unwanted phone numbers.  Also, go to the web and report the number to the Federal Communications Commission .

It is really AMEX. Frustrating how shady they are when they call.  The best part is that I called AMEX about it once and they could not find that number. Apparently they have thousands of them. They were calling my parents for a while.  Its amazing, they werent calling the numbers I actually gave them to call.

I'm replying to my own message.  For the most part I think what I said was true. However, I could see how if a scammer could find out who might be late on a payment that they could potentially pose as AMEX if the individual is expecting a call.  THE BEST THING TO DO IS TO TELL THEM YOU WILL CALL BACK AND CALL THE NUMBER ON YOUR CARD.  If it is really a scam, then why do they stop calling when you handle the situation with AMEX? I guess if they know you are late, they can also know when you have paid... spooky.

    It's a legit call.

I thought it was a scam, but when they called, they were able to see the payments I had just made a few hours ago on their system without me giving them any information, and once I told them I had made the payment, they didn't push for personal informaiton.

So I just got a call from this number.  Very oddly, they asked to speak to a friend of mine, not me.  I asked how they got the number and they said it was in their file.  I know this friend would not have put my number down.  I asked if they had another number for them and they said, "do you?"

I said no and hung up.  incredibly weird

I do not answer calls I don't recognize- period.
If I DID, I certainly would NOT GIVE ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION OUT.

A few of you have stated that you gave them enough info for them to have not hung-up on you and you found that they know about your current account activity with AMEX.

I will tell you right now: If I have your phone number & name & you give me the smallest amount of info- even just your credit card number- I too could tell you what your recent activity w/AMEX is.
ANYONE can. It takes very, very little internet knowledge to do so.

Info from at least 2 people who've posted on here is enough to find-out who you are & details about your AMEX account activity.

AGAIN: it takes VERY little info & VERY limited internet savvy to do so. FOR FREE.
WORSE: For less than $30., someone could have ALL your personal information based on the small amount of info a couple of you have posted here.

MY REASON FOR POSTING THIS IS SIMPLE: To help you avoid a variety of problems.

NEVER, NEVER GIVE AN INCOMING CALLER  ANY  PERSONAL INFORMATION ABOUT  ANYTHING.

NEVER, NEVER POST PERSONAL INFO ANYWHERE ON THE INTERNET.
ESPECIALLY ON THESE TYPES OF BOARDS.

Posting the number calling you, how often/when & who the caller SUPPOSEDLY is, that is ALL you should post.

PLEASE BE CAREFUL & DON'T SET YOURSELVES UP TO BE SCAMMED!

    Peace & security to all : )

Hey...... these people calling from INDIA, CHINA and other countries. where hundred of call centers are running for getting money by fraud from USA and UK citizens... ITS ALL SCAM...

    How it runs..........(for debt collection)

It starts when people tries to get loan online, they fill all their personal detail on that sites and problem starts from this point. all your information is sold to collection agencies (call centers) at $4 to $6 / Person, whether you got that loan or not.

SO what actually they (Call Centers) do...

    1. They have all of your information includes: your name, social security number, address, employment detail, 2 references and a detail of amount.( which you didn't get)

    2. For dialing purpose call center gets USA or UK numbers. they calls through various softwares (like: ICALL). And have various phone numbers.

3.They hire college students or some people and prepare them to communicate with you. (training classes for getting a bit of American accent) and gives them fake names (American).

    4. They makes a write up for leaving message to threaten you. like:-

"This message is intended for Mr. john (your name).  john the very second you receive this msg i need you or your retained attorney to call me back. the issue at hand is extremely time sensitive. my name is ..........., and i am calling from financial accountability association, my call back no. is 123456789, i am repeating this for you john 123456789, john don't disregard this msg and call me on my number back as soon as possible. if i don't get any call from you or from your attorney........ wish you good luck, bye"

    5. If you pick up phones ...they will threaten you by saying... that federal govt or federal legislation  is going to pressing lawsuit against you and your social security number. and try to make you remember that you took a pay day loan and never paid it back... so it is very easy to threaten you by saying that "such company falling lawsuit against you for your unpaid loan".
( you don't know for which loan he/she talking about and try to remember your last 2- 3 loans (which you actually got and never paid)).  At this time you stuck in the situation.

(according to my perception you never know "how many loan you took in last 1 or 2 year"- sorry-- joking)

    6. They will tell that you are charged against these allegations:-  1. Theft by deception 2. collateral cheque fraud

    7. They will tell u that they have sent various mails to inform you but u never replied and that was the only way to communicate you.

8.They will ask u to write a Apologizing letter that “your intention was not bad and you never wanted to run away with that money & you want to fix that issue by paying ..... amount.”

    how to avoid them...

    1. By telling that you have an attorney (Both criminal and bankruptcy). give any number by saying "call to my attorney"... they won't call.
    2. By telling that u know : Its ALL SCAM .......... they will hung up.
    3. By telling that its not my social security number....... they will never call.
4.By asking for the date of loan taken (online)........ they can't help you in this matter (by which u can come to know about scam)

    Don't be afraid.........They won't sue........

If this detail is helpful for you please copy paste this into other pages... don't be selfish.... and save other people from being fool.

My English is not so good.
I am an Indian........ all Indians are not same... you can send me mail for more detail:- jasusviju@gmail.com

IF YOU REALLY TOOK LOAN AND WANT TO PAY IT BACK THEN PLEASE VERIFY ALL DETAIL BEFORE PAYING ANYONE.........

    Thanks and help people

Thank you for your comments and information.  We just received a call from this number.  I don't answer any call for which there is no identification listed.  Neither my husband or myself have an Amex card.  I had one years ago (10+ years) which was paid in full and cancelled.  Will be blocking this one going forward.
