Took a call recently and the Indian accent was not a good start! From years of experience this usually this means it's a scam.

    Not this time.

It turned out to be a genuine call from wife's bank.

Initially we ignored what they said about being from her bank, thinking it was a scam and politely, in case it was genuine, ended the call. However we then called the bank on their standard number (not the number the call arrived on!) and discovered there had been what they thought was a fraudulent transaction on her account and yes they had called us!

My advice? Never disclose any personal or financial details to anyone who cold calls, even if they sound plausible and do NOT go to any web site they ask you to go to.

If the caller purports to be from a financial or other institution you deal with, exit the call and ring your bank (or whoever they claim to be from) on the number you would normally use and get them to verify that they have called you.

If it's from an obvious scammer such as "Your PC is running very slowly go to this web address so that I can speed it up..." then by all means give them an earful of abuse as that call is an attempt to gain access to your PC in order to steal money from you!

In the initial thread I put that the call was from HSBC, Sorry that was a different & genuine call from a different number.

If you can do without your phone for a while, don't replace your receiver and so keep the number calling connected to your line. I've done this a few times with various nuisance calls - once for over 5 hours - and it does seem to stop further calls!!
