calls from this number repeatedly hang up. asked me who the owner of the home pc is? who is this? sounded like an indian woman

Welcome to the longest running scam on here.  Call from India using a fake number via Skype.  The callers sometimes claim to be from, or affiliated to, Microsoft.  This is the first lie, as neither Microsoft, nor its partners, would ever 'phone. Sometimes they say they are from your Broadband supplier, but cannot name that supplier!  They say that your computer is infested with viruses or Trojans or has malicious downloads.  This is the second lie, as they know nothing about or computers, not even the IP addresses or what version of Windows we use.  They even 'phone Mac users and tell them their Windows system has viruses!!  They offer to "fix" these faults, but what they want is remote access to your computer.  If they get it they will install spyware/malware to steal personal information, like bank details and passwords.  The bottom line is to never, ever, give remote access to your computer to a cold caller.

wow, thanks for the quick response. it was very suspicious as she said, " are you the owner of the main pc?" i said, "who is this again?", then she hung up. very suspicioso. phew, i thought i was in trouble for something i may/may not have done.

which brings me to another question. how in the hell did they get my phone number? i'm a bit of a ghost on the net and never give out any real information....

There is a huge black market in our information.  People use telephone directories, electoral rolls, information left on dodgy websites and, of course there was the report last year of some employees at Indian call centres used by UK companies stealing and selling our personal information.  Recently there have been the fake survey 'phone calls.  These people, calling themselves (to pick two) UK Opinion Polls and Consumer Lifestyles,  are trying up names, addresses and "live" telephone numbers and any other information they can get.  They then sell on this information.

Called by Consumer Lifestyles and wished to complain so spoke to Alan and he was extremely helpful, professional and a pleasure to talk to. However, he was sadly unable to assist with my complaint as to why Consumer Lifestyles continually called. He gave me the number for the main office and I was transferred to a lady called Hannah Mansfiled. She wasn’t as slick as Alan but still got the job done. Below are her details:
