They called me, cimply want to join the game and debit my account 55GBP. I don't know how they get my account info. I just said no and the lady proceed with offering and debit process.

I have received several calls from this number, caller presents himself as European Lottery Guild agent. Was interested to sell me lottery tickets and withdraw money from my card. Last calls I ignored. And good question is.....Who is paying for the call?

This number called me on Monday 29th September and Tuesday 30th September 2008, i did not answer any of the calls, it just looked suspicious. Reading the other comments i am so glad i didnt. I think they need reporting

European lottery. Said I won $1,500,000. I had to send off a cheque for £2000 and they will send me the money. Can't wait!

The 00604675 normally comes up on my system as +604675 and is sent by outgoing calls from European Lottery Guild's office in Canada (they also have an office in the Netherlands) and the incoming number for them is +1 604 675 2704

The company was investigated by the UK's Advertising Standards Authority as a complaint was made about various issues arising from an advert by ELG, including A. whether European Lottery Guild could show that they offered the "specialised expertise of a Chartered Accountant" and B. whether Mr Potter existed and was a genuine winner.

These complaints were not upheld, and you may like to read their comments and make your own opinion on the genuine nature of the company:

A. Complaint not upheld
ASPRA submitted a copy of ELG's brochure, which explained how they operated and listed the services they offered. They also sent a letter from the Chartered Accountant referred to in the ad feature. The Chartered Accountant stated that he met Mr Potter in Vancouver, Canada, when the latter travelled there to collect his lottery winnings. The purpose of the meeting was for the Chartered Accountant to provide Mr Potter with all the documentation relating to his winnings, including the original order form, photocopies of the tickets that had been redeemed in Spain, copies of the cheques provided by the Spanish Lottery and confirmation that the cheques had been deposited and that the Spanish bank was clearing the transfer; the documents were to assist Mr Potter in dealing with his UK bank and confirming the deposit of his funds. The Chartered Accountant stated that he had advised Mr Potter to obtain independent legal and accounting advice in England from accredited professionals and it was his understanding that Mr Potter had followed that advice.

We considered that we had seen sufficient evidence to substantiate the claim that ELG had provided the "specialised expertise of a Chartered Accountant".

On this point, we investigated the ad feature under CAP Code clauses 3.1 (Substantiation) and 7.1 (Truthfulness) but did not find it in breach.

B. Complaint not upheld
ASPRA submitted a copy of a dated letter, from ELG to Mr Potter, which stated that Mr Potter had won €17, 391, 507.13 and that ELG would pay for his travel to Vancouver to collect his winnings and for his accommodation and meals during his visit. The letter also required Mr Potter to agree to grant ELG the perpetual right and license to use his name, likeness, photographs, quotations and endorsements for promotional purposes; the letter bore Mr Potter's signature and gave his full address. ASPRA also submitted copies of several regional and national newspaper articles that were in the public domain; the articles reported on Mr Potter's lottery winnings. ASPRA also sent a bank statement, which they said showed that funds had been wired to Mr Potter's account.

We considered that we had seen sufficient evidence to substantiate that Mr Potter existed and was a genuine winner.

On this point, we investigated the ad feature under CAP Code clauses 3.1 (Substantiation), 7.1 (Truthfulness), 14.1 and 14.3 (Testimonials and endorsements) but did not find it in breach.

On a personal note, whilst I have not won millions from them I have won small sums on occassions. But it is worth noting the following:

1) The lottery sales agent that gets you to agree to buy tickets does not take your payment, a separate employee in their finance department rings back to take payment details.

2) The finance dept always warn you when taking a payment that it is a game of chance and there is no garantee of any winnings.

3) The finance dept always seek confirmation that you know how much you are spending and what tickets/what lottery it is being used for.

4) When speaking to the finance dept to make payment, there is always the option of not going ahead with the payment despite having given your initial order to the lottery sales agent.

5) All lottery sales agents are identified by a name or number and could be reported to their employers if you are not happy with their service.

6) Different lottery sales agents have different styles, some are more pushier than others (as is always the way with some salesmen) and go for a hard sale, some are more relaxed and go for a soft sale, if you don't like dealing with the guy that you speak to you just say so and stop dealing with them, if you like the guy you can always deal with the one guy if you like and not deal with others.

7) If you deal with them over the phone, you will normally get the same salesman each time, but if you deal with them by post you are more likely to get different people calling you, so just make clear if you get to know one you like that you only want to deal with them.

8) They will give you a FreePhone number (from UK it is 0800 969 029, but there are different numbers in each country) you can call and speak to them to order or complain, and they seem to take complaints seriously.

9) Despite having used them on many occassions, and now having used a few cards, I have never had any problem with unauthorised transactions or incorrect transactions as a result of my dealings with them.

If you are interested in buying foreign lottery tickets they do provide a good service, and as long as you have no gambling addiction it may be worth a try!

Some of the comments posted sound like people have been contacted by scammers!

Scam letters & e-mails have been circulating that use the name 'European Lottery', 'European Lottery Guild' or 'European Lottery Guild INC.' and that feature a forgery of European Lottery Guild's crest.

The letters & e-mails claim the recipient has won a lottery. Some refer to insurance fees & commission that must be paid, & others caution the recipient to tell no one about the win. Similar letters have also circulated using the name 'European Lottery Guild Ltd.'

If you've received a letter, fax, or e-mail claiming to be from the European Lottery Guild but it contains any of the warning signs listed above, please contact them immediately at info@europeanlotteryguild.com or by the phone numbers you'll find on their 'Contact Us' page of their website (which have been posted in a separate post on this site).

Some of the posts are quite worrying and I therefore thought you should know the truth about scammers and the lies they tell!

Here’s a quick fiction-versus-fact overview of the lies scammers tell... and some real information about how ELG take care of their customers:

Fiction:  It’s possible to win a lottery you’ve never entered.
Fact:  To win a lottery, you must first enter it. European Lottery Guild will never tell you that you’ve won a lottery prize if you are not a registered player with them. You must first purchase an entry to have a chance to win.

Fiction:  You must pay legal, insurance, and administration fees on lottery winnings before you can collect.
Fact:  European Lottery Guild never charges its winners legal, insurance, or administration fees to collect a prize. When you play with them, the only amount you ever pay is your initial entry fee.  

Fiction:  You must pay tax on your lottery winnings before they can be released to you.
Fact:  Winnings from lotteries featured by European Lottery Guild are awarded without tax deductions. If you’re told you must pay tax on your winnings before you can collect them, it’s likely you’re being scammed.  

Fiction:  When you win a lottery, the lottery company will often send you a portion of your winnings by cheque to help you cover taxes and administration fees so that they can release the rest of your money.
Fact:  Scammers are sending very real looking cheques to victims, along with instructions to deposit the cheque, then send the money back to them to cover taxes and administration. The cheques are counterfeit, but the banking system can take up to six weeks to discover this. If you cash such a cheque and, in turn, send on the money before your bank discovers the fraud, you will be liable for the full amount. European Lottery Guild will never ask you to remit any portion of your winnings to them to cover any fees whatsoever. When you win, you will receive the full value of your prize. And depending on your country of residence, the method of payment is up to you.

Fiction:  It’s common for lottery companies not to provide you with any documentation of your plays.
Fact:  A reputable organization will send you complete details of your lottery plays. Each time you play a lottery through European Lottery Guild, they will send you a detailed confirmation of your entry which includes the name of the specific lottery, the numbers you played, and your draw dates. At the end of your play period, they will send you a final statement clearly showing any winnings you may have made on that order. (If you win a major prize at any time during the course of your entry, they will notify you immediately by telephone.) I CAN TESTIFY TO THIS AS THEY KEEP MAILING ME CONFIRMATIONS OF EVERY ORDER AND ANY/ALL WINNINGS EVEN IF I DON'T WANT SO MUCH PAPERWORK AS THEY WANT EVERYTHING TO BE ABOVE BOARD AND IN ORDER!

Fiction:  If you don’t collect your winnings by a certain deadline, you’ll be disqualified from claiming them.
Fact:  If you play lotteries with ELG and win, there’s no deadline for collection. ELG include payment for your winnings with the final statement they send you at the end of your play period. (For convenience, small wins of less than €5 are credited directly to your ELG account and are available on request at any time.) You can also request payment of your wins balance at any time prior to the end of your play period. In addition, should you win a jackpot and wish to collect your prize in person, ELG will make any necessary arrangements for you and cover your travel expenses. AS WAS VERIFIED BY THE ASA DURING AN INVESTIGATION INTO AN ADVERTISEMENT PLACED IN THE UK, THEY CONFIRM THAT ONE WINNER HAD INDEED HAD ELG MAKE AND PAY FOR HIS TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS.

Fiction:  For security reasons, if you win a lottery you must keep your win confidential until after you collect your prize. Failure to do so can result in disqualification.
Fact:  Telling you to keep quiet is the scammers’ way of ensuring their own protection until they’ve got what they want from you. ELG respect your privacy and will never publish any information about your win without your consent. However, ELG will never insist that you not tell others about your win. They want you to celebrate!
