- SamB| 1 replyI've had 2 calls from this number, today and last week. Both times they've identified themselves as a "Debt Advice Agency". I've told them both times that I don't need any debt advice!
- Mr BOMG
In the past 5/6 months they have called about 8/9 times
Each time i tell them about prefered caller and that i am not in debt so i don't need them but it never ends....
They say that they will "take me off their list" and 3 weeks later.
Ring ring... ring ring.... Hello, could i speak to Mr B...- Caller: Debt Advice Agency
- Sam WilliamsKeep getting phone calls from the Debt Advisory Bureau, who claim it is not a sales call. Even though tell them i don't have any debt I get 3 or 4 calls a week from them.
- Caller: Debt Advisory Bureau
- Stephen RoseNumber may be linked to serial phone spammers, who have allegedly called claiming to be various agencies, including: Debt Advice Bureau; Debts Direct; Money Manager; Money Management; Debt Advisory Board; The Debt Managers; and others.
As a counsellor at www.debtadvicebureau.org.uk we put a form to collect details when we found out what was going on and started taking flack for someone else's misdeeds. We've logged over 200 reports. However, this particular number, which is linked to VoIP, only started being reported to us on July 11th. The phone spammers have claimed to be India-based and calling on behalf of a Leicester-based company. But the nature of VoIP means the callers could be anywhere.
According to Andrew Cummings at the Telephone Preference Service, "[the TPS] has also received information relating to a company based in Leicester who are using a variety of names and telephone numbers when making unsolicited direct marketing calls and alleged to be responsible for high volumes of these unsolicited direct marketing calls relating to debt advice, consolidation etc". The Information Commissioner Office are reportedly investigating. Similarly, it has been reported that Leicestershire Trading Standards are also investigating.
If you are getting calls, keep a record. Report it to TPS, ICO, post info here. If you want, complete the form on the bureau website and let us know your experiences too. If you have the ability to record calls, do so. Some call recipients have reported inappropriate claims being made, others profanity and abuse.
At this time I don't know who is actually behind all the calls. Whether it is one or more companies. One thing seems clear. Whoever they claim to be, is the one company they are not. - OutragedI had a call from an Indian call centre claiming to be from the debt advice bureau, he asked for my husband, I said he was at work and then he said "I think you're lying, I think he is F**k to you."
Well quite apart from the grammatical error of his sentence, would I really answer the phone, at 2pm on tuesday if I was my husband was f*** ING me????
I think not. The advice the TPS gave was to be polite and say hold on I'll just go and get my husband, and leave the phone on the side and allow them to waste their money on the call. They'll soon face bancrupcy themselves if we all did this.Good luck.- Caller: debt advice bureau

Intimidating debt collectors push Britons to suicide: report
Reuters : London, Wed Jan 23 2013, 10:23 hrs
Irresponsible lending and intimidating debt collectors are pushing thousands of people in Britain into depression and suicide, a report said on Wednesday and separate data showed more people are taking their own lives.
Many people already struggling with the economic slowdown, wage freezes and benefit cuts were often overwhelmed by tactics used by some money lenders, including persistent phone calls and threatening letters, said the paper.
"Debt clients frequently feel humiliated, disconnected and entrapped, with the process of debt collection having a clear impact on people's mental health," the report by researchers from England's University of Brighton said.
"The government must take urgent action to tackle the problem of irresponsible lending and intimidatory collection tactics which has left thousands of people trapped in a spiral of debt and at risk of depression and even suicide," it said.
Separately, figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) released on Tuesday showed a "significant" rise in suicides in 2012.
The Brighton report, launched on Wednesday by British parliamentarian Molly Meacher, said there were cases of individuals not eating properly and asking their young children for money to tide them over.
One individual who owed money described the effect of his wife's credit card lapsing.
"I was very close to calling the doctor to her because she is that close to breaking because of ... these continual phone calls," the man was quoted as saying.
SIGNIFICANT RISE
The total number of suicides in the UK hit 6,045 in 2011, a 7.8 percent increase on 2010 with deaths among men accounting for the largest proportion, according to figures from the ONS.
