I very nearly fell for this a while ago and trust me; it’s easier to get caught up than you think!!! So pass this to anyone you know that just bought a phone!

    - In my case the caller claimed to be from Guardian Insurance and noted that I had “just taken out a new contract with Vodafone including Guardian Insurance”, which automatically grabbed my attention a bit coz I vaguely remembered being offered insurance from Guardian when buying my phone online and wondered whether I had ticked something without remembering or noticing. I was advised that my insurance was being reduced and after confirming my name and address for them I started to feel like they knew less and less about me and once I was asked to confirm my debit card details, I was fairly sure that this was an attempt to either sign me up for insurance without my saying so in the first place or an attempt to simply gain my card details so I checked online and found some info.

The calls appear to be randomly made by a clutch of so-called insurance companies, all based in the Swansea area. What happens is this:

Big corporations, such as Carphone Warehouse, buys cell phones and sim cards in large batches and the phone numbers of all these are in sequence. A dodgy company simply has to buy a cheap handset to discover its number and then dial the couple of hundred numbers that come before and after it. They can be fairly certain that whoever answers will have bought their phone recently and, like most people, will not have insured it. Cunning questioning will elicit the customer's details and they will be urged or tricked into buying insurance. Customers who accept may never receive any paperwork or be able to track down the company.

"The whole industry is aware of the problem," says a spokesman for Carphone. "We have been working with Trading Standards, the Financial Services Authority (FSA) and the police to get these companies closed down but they keep popping up again." Swansea Trading Standards confirms that it has been investigating a number of telesales companies and has referred unauthorised outfits to the FSA. Customers who receive cold calls should alert their service provider.

    Just called 2 minutes ago.

ALSO BEING PESTERED BY 08452453200 AT LEAST 4 OR 5 TIMES A DAY.  If I do *#1471# on the number then another number comes up starting 01642 which I have checked on here and it is something to do with VODAFONE - who my phone is with.  Probably to do with insurance scamming!

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY... COMPLETE SCAMMERS!
In brief... partner purchase the insurance, two weeks later the phone had an accident in the washing machine. Contacted Assure phones for claims forms etc, sent them the phone, which was deemed beyond economy repair.

3 months later NO replacement phone, No refund for the USELESS insurance, absolute rubbish excuses being- ' they are having trouble obtaining a handset'. Numerous calls on my behalf and partner,( NOT one single follow up call from this supposedly ligitamate company. lies from Tim and Karen, ( the muppett duo) whom promised the replacement was in the post and that we would have it by the end of the week... that was three weeks ago!

Could easily go on about how FRUADUALANT this company is, however will not waste anymore time and energy. £89.99 pounds less off, no I phone, plus when asked to return my broken handset, they flat out refused! Now in proceeds of claiming on house insurance, filed a report with the police and reported fraud claim with my credit card issuer.

unfortunately we have learnt a lesson, just hope people seeing this do not make the same mistake as we did.

I too have an iPhone and have had a missed call from this number today. I have not given my number to any third party marketing companies. Could this company be purchasing data from our network providers??

I was pestered  quite a few times by brightphone(not certain if it was this number) and eventually gave in - like others they said they could offer me cheaper mobile phone insurance.   Then I found they had taken 79.99 out of my account.   When I got through to them they said that I had agreed to pay this amount.   I said no way and they came back to me to say they had listened to the recording and it definetly said that I had agreed.   They did not send me the Terms and Conditions until after the two week period, and they did not reply to my letter requesting cancellation of the account.   I have tried to contact them over the last week, by phone and e-mail as my phone has been stolen, and surprise surprise, they are not responding.

    lorraine,
it would appear that you have had the same experiance as we have....they go away and say they have listened to the recording....that is just a ploy to make you think you did say it. did you ask to listen to the recording? they refused my request by saying it was because of data protection - however, i have recently been told that i have the right to listen to it as it was me who was talking, my details - whos data are they protecting?? theirs because they are trying to cover their backsides!!

Be VERY careful of these cold "insurance" callers !!! They are scammers especially one which cought someone i know out whos company is based in SWANSEA !! They ask very personal details such as card info and appear to be very knowlegeable about you and your contract (im assuming they get their info from some 02 source) additionally they claim they work on behalf of 02 and are associated with them... BUT THEY ARE NOT!!! Which has been confirmed by 02 themselves when we contacted them....

so best advice is no matter how knowledgeable they appear DO NOT give out ANY of your details to them !!! SCAMMING [***] !!!!

Follow this to have some fun--press 141 followed by their number, then put your phone on secrecy and listen to them squirm!!!!

Payback time--do this if you have time and only if its free for you to call the land line numbers of course.....They may understand how frustrating it can be--The more people call them back and give THEM the silent treatment, we could put them beggars out of business.

    POWER TO THE PEOPLE!
