An indian sounding guy called me today and explained that my computer has a virus, and asked me to 'run' prefetch unwanted..... at which point i stopped him and asked his name 'Nick Arthur' (yeah right), company 'Advanced Support' and telephone number '01865600898'. After a few more questions he told me his company worked on behalf of windows, and that he got my details from the company who sold me my computer, although he couldn't tell me the company, or the type of computer (i bought it from a very large chain). His aim was to advise me on the best software to remove my 'virus', at which point i told him i was busy and would call him back later (i lied).

Hi, A friend had a woman Kennardy Daniel saying she was fro "Global" a Company appointed by Microsoft to administer "Windows" and wanted the Windows and R pressing to stop hackers getting into her computer. She gave the 01865600898 phone number I rang it and an Indian man gave me the same information. They were most forceful and convincing in trying to make the computer modifications they required. BUT THEIR INSTRUCTIONS WERE NOT FOLLOWED. I believe they wanted the Remote assistance activating in order to access the computer.

    Regards  (retired IT Manager)

It is a scam and you should check and see whether they have installed a BOT or keylogger on your computer.

Of course they will be helpful, they want to gain your trust for their own deceptive purposes.

We had two or three calls from this number telling us there was a problem on our computer and that Microsoft had asked them to help us to sort it out. We asked them to send us the instructions by email. (I work in the software industry and wanted to check the legitimacy of what we were going to be asked to do). Strangely enough the email did not arrive and furthermore we received no more calls. I would treat calls from this number with caution, or indeed from any organisation saying that Microsoft had requested that they call you with regard to a problem on your home computer.

This is most definitely a scam. These people are Asians. Their English is rubbish. Just hang up on 'em. They phoned me twice, knew my name and the phone number they'd called. First time I told them I wasn't interested; second time gave them my views of Asian scammers, Asians in general, Pakistan's floods, Taliban, etc. They haven't called back yet. Hope they do...

I too have been called (more like harassed) by these people. They give the impression that they actually a part of Microsoft and claim that they received an error report from your computer which is why they are calling - this is a lie - they are not a part of MS nor are they a partner. They also do not know what computer you have, nor can they tell you actually have a virus.

They claim that your computer is infected by a rare polymorphic virus that cannot be detected by even the best/latest anti-virus software. Further they claim that your pc will crash any day now and you need to act fast (funny because my pc is still running fine since they first called me a month ago).

They promised me that I would not have to download anything nor go to a website so I went with it (knowing that my pc was actually perfectly fine).

The first thing they do is ask you to go to Start - Run and run "eventvwr" which displays computer events - they ask you to count all the warning and error messages - but are not interested in their nature - what program/application they are from or their frequency in a time period. When you give the amount they say "oh my god! you have 200?!? you shouldn't have more than 3 - you have a serious problem sir!" which is of course a lie - 200 means nothing - what is the frequency- 200 errors in a year - two years? a month -week even? what is the cause of them - they aren't interested - just trying to scare you.

They then ask you to go to C:\Windows\prefetch and count the number of files in that folder - again "oh my god - 75 files!! you should not have more than 20!!". But just google the windows prefetch folder - it contains files that prepare windows to run applications/programs etc for every new program and old programs as well as multiple files for a single program - so there can be any number of files - again a scare tactic.

Then they want you to go to their website and enter details on their online tech support (which is basically a remote access portal using logmein.com (which anyone can use) so that they can control your pc. When controlling your pc they have full access - they can install whatever they want - they can delete files - and even infect you with viruses. ie they will give you problems so that you need to buy their service.

Don't do it - phone up your tech guy - he WILL tell you that techisonline is a scam. If you just google techisonline - every hit (except their website) is a forum/report of them being a scam.

I just had a call from "Dan Watson" who sounded like he was phoning from a typical asian call centre - his English was so bad he had to spell several words.  The Caller ID on our phone was Unavailable - Out of Area, which usually means an international call centre.  He told me he was calling on behalf of "Windows", but never mentioned Microsoft, which I thought was odd.  I didn't want to talk to him so he gave me the old 01865600898 number to call him back on and the Vramahouse address at 176 Banbury Road.  At the end of the address he tried to give me a "zip code" starting 76, then he went off the line and came back with the Oxford postcode OX37 HT (??).  He said that my computer had been calling up Windows several times a day and reporting problems to them so he wanted me to switch on my computer so he could help me sort it out.  He quoted my name and the telephone number, so had got these from somewhere as it's not my name on the telephone bill.  The website address he gave me is www.advancedsupport.com, but I'm not going anywhere near it because sure as eggs is eggs it'll install something nasty on my computer.

    Mr. L.
I've been called by these scammers 2 days in a row. They claim that your computer sent an error report to microsoft and they are the support company for them. Here's where you catch them lying. I've been using the internet since windows 3, so I have advanced knowledge of computers.
Anyway, I let them do their spiel, then I responded "So, you say that you received this info from my computer right??  Well.. what is my IP address that you received this info from?  They didn't know LOL
Then they said that it came from my windows registered computer , so I told them I had more than one computer and to give me the serial number of the operating system that sent them the file.  They couldn't because they didn't recieve a report LOL.
These people are looking for internet newbies to take advantage of. They're wanting access to your computer so that they can corrupt your system, then show you afterwards that the files exist on your computer. Then I suppposed that they want to basically hold your system hostage till you pay them to fix it or simply leave keyloggers on there without your knowledge and try to steal as much personal info as they can over time.
BEWARE they are scammers for sure. and they even called me from an "UNKNOWN CALLER" on my caller ID. No legit company does this.
I played these fools and acted like I was going along with them through the computer as they wanted, and when I got tired of the game I busted knowledge on them and ended their plan.

Anyway, I hope this helps they few who are smart enough to read this before giving them access to your computer.

    Mr Scam Hater
Yes yes YES!! This IS a scam, and they called my house today - and they claimed that my internet had been hacked and was suffering problems...even though I was sat on my laptop at the time!

    [***].

The minute they claimed to be from Microsoft, that was when I knew something was up - Microsoft do NOT call people like this, nor do they have a company that does so.

    [***] (the scammers, not Microsoft).

So we even called-up Microsoft and they claim to have never heard this company OR this number and that they have NO companies doing this work for them.

So basically, you scam artistes really are...

    [***]. :)

According to our records TechisOnline do not have a Microsoft Gold Partner agreement in place with us and are therefore fradulantly claiming to be a Microsoft Partner. Leagal Action has been initiated over this matter. They do not in any way represent the views or policies of Microsoft and do not have access to the database of problems officially reported to Microsoft.

I let them try and talk to me for as long as possible. I am always polite and ask what did you say, Yes click on start and then run, but I don't have a run box in windows only a search box? 3 supervisors and 20 minutes later they hung up on me. Terribly rude.

I was called by an Indian man who divulged his name as Steven (Sp?) Gomes calling from TechisOnline in Queensland. Said they were a small company just starting up in the business of helping people with the virus problems. Very smooth indeed. Unfortunately I already had my computer turned on and was caught hook line and sinker. I should have heard the alarm bells ring when he quoted a fee in Euros to fix this problem. He said I could check the website www.techisonline to see that it was a regular company and gave me the phone number as 0731 777 544. I paid this by credit card through the online www.alertpay.com That name did sound strange to me - another dig to be alert! and I still didn't get it. I allowed Steven Gomes to access my computer and then he said the technician would take over. When I asked for the technician's name he said it was Mick Gomes and that I could ring him any time. I watched what was happening for the first little while and it really looked like a routine check through my system. An hour later the checking was still going on and still looked legitimate - the pop-up window on the screen read - Advanced SystemCare. It was for Spyware removal. I thought nothing of it at the time, but Spyware is a protection program.

The whole "repair" lasted for at least five hours. Then about a week later I again got a phone call from TechisOnline to ask me quality control questions. After several of the usual type of questions to me I asked the man his name and he said "Steven Gomes". "But you were the one who called me in the first place," I answered. "Yes, and this is a call to show you that everything is legitimate and above board," he replied.

Please watch out for this too smooth character and report him to the Police, to the DoNotCall Register, to Microsoft. If they do get access to your computer, be sure to change all your credit cards PINs and passwords and any other personal documents, as well as having a computer technician check your computer thoroughly for corruptions.

My mother has had about 6 calls in one week from indians claiming to be calling on behalf of windows as she has an error message, and asking her to go to her PC.
luckily enough mums computer is FAR too slow for her to even worry, and she called me to ask.  i told her to stop being so gullible and when they ring again, tell them where to go and hang up. im just glad my mother barely knows how to use the computer!
they gave her two numbers 649951229 which is apparently toll free, and 9163655191.. what bull.

These guys must think we are so stupid.  You are more likely to receive a call from Nasa than "Windows". This is a TOTAL SCAM.  They want to access your computer and watch what you do on your internet banking etc.  They cannot write, they are a bunch of thieving blood suckers.
