They guide you through a few steps on your computer

    1) Press Windows + R for Run Command
    2) type eventvwr to open eventviewer box
    3) Look at windows logs, application and system and see the scary yellow and red icons (count them. These are malicious alterations of your programs supposedly.)
    4) Look into My computer/Computer properties
    5) Write down the last 6 digits
    6) go to their website and use the code to verify your OS(this is from http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1485775,please check it.)

An Indian-sounding chap (I think) called me from this outfit tonight. Claimed to be calling from the USA.
He said he was calling from Windows Support, and that a recent microsoft update had downloaded an unwanted program onto my computer.

I am an I.T. professional so I thought I'd play along for a while. I informed him I was an I.T. professional and quite interested in what he was about to say.

He instructed me to run "prefetch unwanted programs" from the start->Run dialog.
I am quite familiar with prefetched programs and the contents of this folder. Not sure I ever want Windows to try and tell me what it considers an unwanted program...

When I asked him to explain the purpose of this and what results I could expect to see BEFORE I entered the command, the conversation with him started to get very agitated.

When asked whether his Windows Support company was part of Microsoft, he started abusing me concerning my claims to be an I.T. professional, saying comments such as "you dont even know that Microsoft was the manufacturer of Windows" (or similar). The fact that there was a 3-second delay on the phone-line didnt help the conversation flow very smoothly.

Eventually, after several more minutes of me not entering the command and asking him for details about what he was expecting me to see, I had the pleasure of him hanging up on me. I think his parting words to me were "you need to find another job if you think you're an I.T. professional".

If this isnt a scam, then I know for sure that I dont want any dealings with them.
But pretty sure it's a scam...

I too have been called today by the very charming (ahhmp!) Sam Wilson who kindly informed me I had problems with my computer.
Alarm bells rang within seconds and so got as much info as I could and have reported to Crimestoppers 0300 333 3000 who are well aware of their SCAM! Obviously the more reports of these calls the more chance of getting them stopped.

I was also advised to report the call to the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) as we are registered with them and  they can then follow up and fine them for calling in the first place! http://complaints.tpsonline.org.uk/Consumer/

me and my flatmates have been called so many times buy these guys . sometimes i play along sometimes i just hang up.
but i never really do what they ask me to.

and have told my flatmates not to ether.
i laugh when they call my line for my flatmate (phone line is under his name)
and tell me his/my computer is infected and contacting them/microsoft.
as my PC is the only one connected to that line and he would be contacting me not my flatmate.

one of my flatmates nearly got done buy them the first time they called but he was having trouble and i took over and figured it was a scam.
only thing is i don't relay know who to contact to report these guys. ( have been on DNC list for over a year )

got a call tonight (02/02/2011 fromMax Dawson claiming to be from windows support. I'm not too good with computers but at first concerned that there was something wrong with my pc listened for a while, when I started asking questions the phone was disconected but they phoned back. This call was from Sam Wilson who said he wanted to help fix my pc for me!!!!!! Told him I was to busy to sit in front of my computer. He is going to call me back tomorrow. Guess what response he is going to get. Thank God for Google, it got me here. Thank you all for taking the trouble to warn novices like me about thi type of scam.

Got caught out with this scam. Like an idiot I went all the way through, and even gave my card details, I know it was stupid but it seemed plausable as my computor was running very slow and they had all of the answers. Luckily I saw this message and have now cancelled my credit card, and I am covered for internet fraud and wont loose any money. These people have no scruples. All of the details mentioned by Miller 21 Dec 2010 are the same ones that I fell for.

my girlfriend had a phonecall from these guys last week asking for me but she told them i wasn't available and they'd have to call back, then this morning they called my mum using the same old flannel 'you have a problem with your p.c.....blah,blah,blah!!' she asked for the his name and no. hilarious, the name he gave was Brok Johnson....sounds like a pornstar' anyway i rung him back, he answered with an indian accent, i asked him where he was and he replied oxfordshire, i then started to ask him questions about the company and accused them of being scammers at which point he hung up, complete scam guys, if you get one of these calls then hang up or have some fun with them first, then abuse them and then hang up!..........Tossers!!!!

    PS
Some Indian guy called 'Alvin Briggs' calls me today from a withheld number. He says he is calling from the windows support and that their company has had reports of malicious software or viruses on my computer and about an IEM file. I ask him for his name and number which he gives me as this number. He says the company is based in Oxfordshire, and says he has my unique windows operating system id which is a 8 digit code. He wanted me to type 'cmd' in the 'Run' command box and to help me remove the alleged software or files I have that is causing my computer to run slow. I knew immediately to take his name and contact number and the company he works for at the start of the call as I do with all strange unexpected calls such as this. I was surprised he had my full name, address, and home telephone number. I asked him if he had my mobile number but he said they didn't have the authority to call customers on their mobiles. I don't know how they obtained my details since my number has been ex directory for some time now. I told him I would ask my brothers about them as they are very good with computers, and that I would call him back. I googled their company and the number he gave me and called him back to explain to him that it is a scam from the information I have read. It is strange that when I called this number it rang for a long time then they eventually picked up and it was a different guy. He said he would get 'Alvin' to call me back and asked for my number which they should have had already. It seems like it is a small number of scammers working together and not from a call centre. When 'Alvin' called back it was from a withheld number again. I told him I would have to report him and he said it didn't worry him because he had my details and it was a legitimate company. He asked if I wanted to continue erasing the files and I asked him what he wanted me to do on the computer...I think he then realised I was wasting his time because he hung up...I only wanted to find out the nature of how they operate though lol. Anyway beware of this company. Alvin Briggs doesn't sound like an indian name....lol

i just got a call from the 'technical solutions' team wishing to help me with my problems - apparanetly i have lots of emails going to the windows help - without my knowledge - i had dan watson @ asian speaking gent - at first i didnt realise it was a scam coz he had my address and i had previuosly had  problems and had been in touch with some assistance on microsoft - so didint realise at first, it wasnt until he kep taking me through menu's and kept saying 'mam be patient i am trying to help you!, mam you are not listeming, 'the reason i was not hearing is the english of said 'dan watson' was not very good and had to keep repeating everything, then at the last hurdle when he asked me to put in the run menu. www.logmein123.com it dawned on me - is this a scam so i politely said oops mu computer crashed and i will call back - he gave me the number 01865600898 and i put the phone down and googled the number which bought up all the post of this is a scam! god knows why it didnt catch me up - as we are always on the ball at work for scams - i think knowing where i lived is the most scary thing - i have reported to TPS. but the funning thing is he called me back again - i said i knew nothing of the call and he got impatient and hung up!!! pretty good scam i dont normally get caught out!!!!
