There is a thriving black market in the sale of personal information. There are unscrupulous companies which sell on our details, there are the fake surveys from people like "UK Opinion Polls" and "Consumer Lifestyle" whose sole purpose is to tie up names, addresses and "live" telephone numbers. Even if you just hang up on them they have achieved their object.  I know this because I tracked back an unsolicited call to them.  There are also the employees of overseas call centers used by UK companies who sell on our details to supplement their income.  That is all besides the 'phone book and Electoral Roll.

I like to keep them talking on the phone if I have nothing better to do.  I start by telling them that I know nothing about computers, they appear to take more interest then.  When they ask you to start 'doing' things on the computer just keep repeating what they say and they will give you the answer of what you should be looking at on the screen.  The last call I had, I kept them on the phone for 25 minutes and they even got the supervisor to take over as I 'reported' that I had many, many lines of code and messages with errors.  My son even took over the call at one point.

Of course, I did none of the instructions, just kept them talking and occasionally threw in the odd comment of being stood in front of my windows and my doors as well and telling them how many I could see through!

Incidentally they don't even deter when you tell them that you don't have a PC!! They insist that you must have!

Sad, I know, but I found it amusing when I was at home during the day with nothing better to do.!

    THIS IS A SCAM!!!!!
I've had 3 calls from 0203 234 5673 in 3 days! they seem to have me on some sort of timer as I had a call on Tuesday at 12.44 and one today at 12.44!  Aparently, I have a virus on my computer, they can never answer your questions (I just love winding them up at their expense!!) I've told them time & time again to stop calling, I'm registered with TPS and that I'm going to report the company, but still the calls keep coming..... well I have reported them now not sure if TPS can do anything as the calls sound like they're coming from India, not sure how they can use a London number?

REPORT THEM TO: http://www.ico.gov.uk/complaints/marketing/21.aspx  They can fine the company.

Just received a call from this number as well. Sounded like the caller was an India male and the line quality was poor plus a lot of background noise. I asked where he was calling from and he responded Belfast. I challenged this as it wasn't a Belfast no. A bit more challenging and he hung up.
My guess he was calling from abroad. I never answer international calls now nor any others where I can't see their number.
    Can anyone block this number?

Caller with Indian accent said my computer was sending messages showing that it had viruses. Told him I hadn't got a computer but he persisted so i said I would go and look for one then I hung up. Previously I told similar caller that I had an Apple ( I was eating one at the time) and he immediately hung up.

    This is a scam.
The guy claims to be from Microsoft in Londan, and even gives the microsoft address when I requested his company, phone number and address.
He then went through a spiel about problems with my computer, and that stuff was being downloaded when I browser.  It wasn't on at the time.
I strung him along for quite a while, pretending that I was following his instructions, at the point where he would have me get to the Computer Management Console, I couldn't say what I would see, so I guessed that it was the Help and Support and Remote Admin screen.  At this point he realised that I was leading him on, suggested that I take my PC and up it up my a*se (now that is rude).  I told him that I knew what he was up to and was happy to have kept him on the phone to me, instead of someone that could be taken in.  He hung up.

Just had a call from them on this number so played along, having worked in IT for over 20 years this is just scam to get remote access to your machine.

I`ve got a virtual machine that I`ve let them onto in the past for fun just to track them and can see that once the call ends they start looking round the machine for user details etc. On the last fun with them I changed the desktop to the FBI logo as soon as they connected and saw it they hung up... :-)
3 best things you can do : -
    1) Play along and ask dumb questions.
    2) Place them on hold or leave the phone on the side, they will get board and hang up.
    3) Tell them you have a Mac/Apple or Linux machine.

    Hi Heidi

Did your caller give you his name, his company's name and the phone number he was calling from?

I have had similar calls from a "James Anderson" from "Global PC User" and from phone number 02032345673.

    This is certainly a scam.

    Not so old lady
Got a call from this number 30 minutes.  I was surprised "Charles Brown" gave his number and it was on 1471 too.  As I'm very aware of this scam (and not the first time) I said someone was at the door and would phone him back.  In his dreams!  My brother's mother-in-law nearly got caught by this company or another similar one but was so inept with her computer and following the instructions that the caller put the phone down after nearly an hour!  Beware everyone.

We get calls everyday from this 02032345673 number. It usually goes one of two ways: a) nobody at the other end speaks, and then the phone is put down at the other end - or b) we get the message about something being wrong with our computer. I have been advised that if they get access onto your PC they can put Trojans on it, and worse yet, if you are silly enough to offer them payment for their "service" then they can continue to take money from your account and the banks over here say that they are powerless to stop this.

What I would like to know is how do I block these corrupt pests from continuing to phone me?

    Attack Alarm By The Phone
I started receiving these calls this week after making an enquiry about my credit card.

When I contacted my credit card company a couple of weeks ago, i'm pretty certain the call centre was in India.

    Call me sceptical...

Anyway, i've aquired an attack alarm, so next time I get a call from a rude Indian 'Microsoft' employee called James, they're going to find out what it sounds like.
