I'm in Western Australia, and I've gotten this call twice over the last few weeks now. Not sure if it's the same number, but given the same behavior (call, nothing on the other end, beep, automated "goodbye" message), it is highly likely to be the same thing.

As for Powwow Water, I've never even heard of them before this.

I HAVE GOOD NEWS... well, an answer, at least.

    It's a telesales technique.
The telesales company uses a machine to dial lots of numbers on behalf of one telesales operator.
The first person to pick up talks to the operator and all the other numbers that it calls gets the *beep* "goodbye" message.

Thanks.   I figured as much.  I've had hang up calls from telemarketers in the past which involve a simple hang-up.   But the beep and the "good.....bye" are an added annoying touch.  I don't have Caller ID,so I don't know what number is being used.  But it's happned three times today; once yesterday.   Tomorrow, I will contact my phone company to see if anything can be done.

Don't have caller ID so don't have the number of the caller and I'm also retired on a private number so can't believe mine are from Powwow Water but I've been plagued by silent calls ending in 'goodbye'. They started about 12 months ago. Recently had 8 in 36 hours; usually 3-5 per week. My line operator Orange doesn't seem aware of them but set up bar on all 'withheld numbers' but it hasn't worked so they must be international calls. Problem now is even hospital can't contact me by their phones.

My marketing experience makes me doubt computerised telemarketing. From total numbers available, likely chance of computer picking same number so many times in 36 hours seems like winning the lottery every month, especially if it's an international organisation with the numbers then available. Secondly, every contact must cost money so surely extremely expensive. Finally, based on number of calls I've received I'd then expect a much higher number of calls from sales companies than I do - and that's far too many.

We've had a number of personal problems in the last 6 months and the last thing we need is to keep rushing to the phone for one of these calls. Why can't OFCOM do something about them????
