Sure they can SMS you but you can ignor an SMS. If your having problems with a bill they can do payment plans. Not easy to do via SMS. My friends that forget to pay their bills don't answer their phone to their phone company but if your bill is late they leave a message anyway. If your contract is up then they go through the options of what new plans there are. Sometimes they have better offers than the one you were on but if you do not answer your phone then they place you on the same plan as before. If your happy missing out on possibly saving money then don't answer your phone and miss out on special deals. Set up a pin number with them if you don't want to give your date of birth.

Got a call from 0289560269 with my mobile. Apparently, he knows my name. The guy called himself Danny and from Optus. After a quick check on service, he asked my DOB for verification.

I don't have a problem to verify my DOB if I called the company. But why they need to verify me if they already calling my mobile number. Do you call your friend's mobile number need to verify who he or she is? Apparently something is not right here. I wouldn't tell anyone calling me about my DOB, period.

Let's be reasonable. If you've knowingly given your details to the company (say, when you signed up for their service, of course), it is not unexpected if they contacted you some time in the future. They do have a job to do. If you don't want ro receive calls from them, find out how to take yourself off their calling list. Simple. It's a no win situation for them here. If they call to find out how their service has been faring, customers get defensive. If they don't put in the effort, customers get angry.

If you get a phone call from a company/organization that you are not/do not remember being associated with, then by all means be prudent with the information. However, also do remember that with the Internet around, your details may have already been inadvertently made public (say through Facebook) and they don't really need to call you to get them. I also expect that tech-savvy scammers have better ways of getting your personal information than by calling each person individually.

Just got off the phone with Optus customer care, as called by me with the number stored on my phone from factory, seems the number is legit.

Still not going to give up anything on a cold call to me. If they push, they get false information.

This number called 3 days in a row and each time hangs up as soon as I answer.
Even when I asked ... "who are You?"
Why the calls and from whom????   Getting fed-up..

if it really is Optus and they need to contact me (and yes, I am an Optus Customer), why can't they leave a message?

I don't answer any call that is not listed in my known contacts on my phone. I ignore the rest. Just because I have a phone dosen't mean I have to answer the phone when it calls. I decide.

got a call. asked me for my birthdate. told her to give  me 3 dates to choose from (since I was not going to give the info she asked for, over the phone. She hung up

Just got a call from this number, and it seemed very legit. They knew my name, how long I have been with the service etc. They then asked me if I wanted to save $10 a month, so I said yes. Anyway they needed to do a background check/ credit history or something. This is when things started to get suss and when I may have done something stupid. They asked for the first 6 and last 4 digits of my credit card (which I stupidly gave), they then wanted to know if I was employed, how much money i earn a week, whether i get paid fortnightly weekly etc, they then wanted to know if I had a home number, whether someone else in my house had a mobile number to verify where I lived. They were asking a lot of questions when all I wanted to do was change my prepaid plan ..

So good work me, just got majorly scammed and probably should report it to my bank seeing as they now have my details

i saved it to contacts as SCAMMER so when they ring i know to hang up.

This is very late but I just received a call from this number too, only to pick up and have someone hang up straight away.

In your recount the person claimed they were from the Philippines, but isn't 02 8956 0269 a New South Wales landline number? Hmmm sounds a bit fishy to me....
I'm with Virgin Mobile so I have no idea why on earth they would bother me if they were actually the Support team for Optus. Even more suspicious now.....

Well for anyone who views this thread in the future, don't give them any of your personal details. Telecommunication companies don't perform follow up 'security checks' or ask for any personal details if you didn't call them first. So if you didn't ask for the help then don't accept the help.

had call from this number, didn't answer as i didn't recognise it, if it was important i figure they would leave a message. they didn't surprise surprise and i googled it to see if it was from the company i ordered a gift from and found this thread....i am not an optus customer and have no idea why they would call me or how they got my number considering my phone and sim are not with them and have never been with them...

They rang me and said my contract was ending soon and asked if I wanted a new mobile and I said yeah 3 days later got a new phone and my contract renewed for another 24 months without payIng a cent more Optus is awesome :D

This number has been calling me for the past 3 days. I never answer and when I try and ring the number back nothing happens. So searched and found this page. I'll just continue to ignore it then!
