Scammers - trying to get data

These people pose as debt collectors but are actually setup to steal your identity. They'll ask you to confirm critical info, including your date of birth, which allows them to sell your identity to criminal groups. Tell them nothing, confirm nothing! Report them to the police.

I just had a missed call from this number saying ‘(my full name) it is urgent that you call us back, I look forward to hearing from you today, thankyou’

Legitimate debt recovery on behalf of American Express.

ECOLL is a debt collection company that acts on behalf of American Express. ( This can be verified by asking American Express directly)
If you get a call asking for personal information and are skeptical then contact the matter holder directly and check your facts prior to acting any further.
Confirming your name by saying "speaking" when they ask for you is a safe way to obtain information from them as they will generally advise who they are acting on behalf of after that.

Alternatively, ask them for their ABN as a scammer will never be able to give you this information as they will not have an ABN.

Companies that act on behalf of American Express are required to verify that they are speaking with the correct person before releasing any information on an outbound call.

Since you are not here looking up a number, your post and the prior post from "ecoll" are sounding a lot like shills.  Numbers and names can be spoofed in caller ID, so IMHO it is sensible to be skeptical.

I think the best advice about calls from this number came from Scott: "Tell them nothing, confirm nothing."  I would add that it is best to call AMEX and follow the trail from them.  See if there is a legit collection effort made.

Reminda debt collectors on behalf of American Express, thought it was a scam as they were asking for personal information without authenticating themselves. I had not received any communications from AMEX about a debt at that stage. Am dealing with AMEX directly rather than reminda

Spoke to the receptionist who didnt know the name of the company she worked for, the nature of her business or where she worked. Pretty sure this is a scam and I believe that the above positive comments are that of the scammers themselves. Will be forward this onto the ladies and gents in blue!

Called saying from AMEX and asked my date of birth. I refused to give over the phone and she said its an urgent matter. - I DONT HAVE AN AMEX, scammers!
