as a very experienced debt collector, i can tell you it is best to call back any msg you are left. it may be an error, it may be that you have been listed as a referee, or it may be that you owe money. companies outsource unpaid accounts all the time, with no thought to why it is unpaid, or without looking to see if a plan is in place.
the ACCC guidelines are very strict on what can and cant be said, and operators are putting themselves at risk of a $50000+ personal fine if they breach any regulations. Hence you will find cagey answers to your queries. The guidelines state that as long as no indication of monies being owed in mentioned or indicated you can be told who the company is.
i have to say most of the answers below, including ones from alleged ex collectors are rubbish. the simple fact is that if you owe money you have a responsibility to resolve it. read the ACCC.
on another note, if an energy company fails to bill you for an extended time frame, they are obliged to reduce the outstanding amount by 3 months i think, and then you are allowed to take the same time frame to pay the bill.

i wont be on this site again, i was actually researching probe group to apply for a job - which i wont be now as i only work for well reputed collection companies in Australia - so save your abuse and ridicule.

I had the same experience and after I refused to tell them anything until they told me what, who and why of their call they hung up.

Put their name and number in your phone address book and you'll be able to tell who's ringing you. Then you can greet them in advance with whatever message you'd like to give them.
