Just got a result from 'Orange' bless em, the rip off merchants are 'non adult church services' and yes if you send a stop txt it will cost you the same, but the 0800 number as above is a call centre who maybe able to help but don't bank on it.

    http://meetme.hotornot.com/r/?emid=BLRSKZO&sid=NM

the "girl" in the link above (from hotornot) asked me for my mobile number and then sent me this text message:

free message - hi dave, erika from hotornot wants to chat and maybee meet
    txt yes to connect now ! 08006800764 2endtxt stop gbp3msg gbp5pw from:80200 10:19 24/11/2008

i thought it sounded dodgy, so i am glad i googled it and found this site before i sent a reply !!!

I checked my balance and i havent been charged for it, so i guess you have to text them back before they can charge you ?

anyway, even if they can charge my mobile, it's "pay as you go" and never has more than £10 on the balance anyway :)

right - now to report it to hotornot's mods :)

just to add to my previous email, in case there is any confusion, i am not suggesting that hotornot had anything to do with the scam. I've used the site for about a year and not had anything like this before. It's not their fault if some of there users are scammers ! (I've reported the user to their mods)

just had another txt from "erika at hotornot" today (25/11/2008) - text was the same as one i got yesterday. checked balance again and i was definately NOT charged to receive it(i wrote balance down earlier) - so i would agree DON'T REPLY !!! (even to say stop) or they will charge you extortionate (sp?) amounts.

The spam is annoying but (fingers crossed) at least i'm not getting charged for it. If anyone knows how to stop it without getting charged let us all know !!!

I think this company is part of a scam based in Australia, that used to be called "Safedivert".  The guys that run it used to be tied up with International Machinery Parts.  Since they're Australian, then the Australian Communications and Media Authorities Anti-Spam Team will most likely be looking into them.

I reckon everyone, even those from overseas should lodge a complaint with ACMA.  I complained about them a while ago and the guy handling the complaint was really helpful.  He told me that if people don't complain we'll never get them shut down.

This is the link to the complaints page:
    http://www.acma.gov.au/interforms/spam_complaint_Mobile.asp

    Hope it helps everyone.
