these [***] call me everyday! 6 times or more.. wtf are they trying to do??? i answer, i say "hello?hello?" and then they just hang up! i cant be charged for their call to me. but if they keep calling and not saying anything and just hang up, what the f**k are they running there???

i am now considering changing my no. and making it a silent no.

The number is Messenger Newspapers (News Ltd subsidiary) and they are cold calling to try to sell you a "feature" in an upcoming issue.  They got my number when I placed an ad some time ago.

they call me every day or so but i don't know how much is charged i called the number back and so stupid thing came up and said i may be contacted in the futcher and hung up some people hay

some one should call the police if peps are being charged

I work for them (news limited) it is not a scam its simply and offer to get the paper delivered if you read it. and we don't actually call and say nothing we have an automatic dialler which sorts the calls from answering machines to pick ups and sometimes it makes mistakes (we get answering machines come though and you get 'hang ups' because it thinks you are an answering machine). Also there is a few second delay when you pick up to when we drop through so sometimes you have already hung up before we have had a chance to say hello. The automatic dialler will keep trying a number if there is no answer assuming that no one is home, it's not us trying to be a nuisance we don't ever instigate a call unless it's a requested call back. We also 'wash' our phone records against the 'do not call register 'about once a month and your number only stays on there for a certain amount of time, so if you have recently signed up or have been on there for a long time that might be the reason you are getting the calls.. We also only ring until 8pmAEST. I dont know any one who would stay back 15 mins late to try and offer subscriptions when every one else in the building has left and our systems dont allow calls to go through after this time. people normally get home from work about 5-6 o'clock so from a business perspective it would make more sense that we work late so we can get a hold of you. If you're not interested, tell us... Telemarketers are not mind readers, they just assume you're not home if you don't answer.

That definately is not true...i think the problem lies with your ability to read phone bills or Telstra itself. The only way that could happen is if you were overseas on international roaming.

Stephanie, if your explanation is correct then there is definitely something wrong with your system. I have had two calls from this number, BOTH times I answered and BOTH times I was hung up on.

I would have told you that I wasn't interested but the message when you call the missed call back is too cryptic. There is no facility to do so. I did not request a callback but figure I am being called as I got a Herald Sun subscription as part of a Rugby membership. As I'm overseas these calls are coming through at 4 am in the morning which is most annoying. It's just not good business practice to annoy your potential customers and I can't see why you would persist. Furthermore the half an hour time difference is due to the different time zone in SA.

This [***] has got to stop !!! 7 calls today from 870021000. on top of all the other telemarketing crap calls
It has gotten to a point where i have to take the phone off the hook. I am now switching over to naked DSL
so that i have no phone number to hassled by [***] ringing up to 16 times a day. Take your surveys and telemarketing and shove it!!!!! This is proof that the do not call register is waste of time.

*sigh* I've been getting them, despite all best intentions and having registered on the Do Not Call register etc. Seriously, you time-wasting fcuktards if someone ain't answering, then activate the half-brain cell you have and try the next stooge coz this number ain't answering FFS. Formal complaint might just follow.

I have had multiple calls from this number and if I happen to answer there is no answer.
Twice they have got through to message bank and just hung up.

Just had a call from thisl number. I answered and said hello, then it just hungup. Not sure why/how they got my mobile, but I do have a newspaper subscription

I received a call from this number today, and when it went to message bank no message was left. I do not answer numbers that i am unsure of, and if it was important i am sure they would left a message.

They have called me twice now. The second time was today. The first time I missed it, no message. I just answered it this time but could tell it was a auto-dialler so I didn't say anything. When the person finally clicked in and realised there was silence on my side, they hung up.
Am wondering if it was to do with the Herald Sun as my deliveries recently ceased. Hmmm, I have also been entering their competitions which asks for your mobile number.

I just answered this call from this is number  they just hung up.
