Had loads of automated and manual calls from 0870 3665378. Eventually decided to google the number (which got me here) and call my branch.

The branch confirmed it was a valid number for their card services team. Advised them that it was  rubbish way to go about things and would not result in a call-back from me.

I have been in France since the end of August. I hadn't switched on my UK mobile phone for a while, but decided to last night (Monday 17th Dec. '07). It was 10pm French time (around 9pm UK time), when the phone rang. It was the number from Brighton:  01273 743 574. I picked it up, but could not recognise the dialling code, until afterwards when I checked it on the internet.

The man asked if he could speak to 'Mr. A. (X)'; ie he didn't ask to speak to 'the forename'. I told him it was me, and he then asked to confirm my address and post code. I asked him why I should give him my details when it was him who rang, and he explained it was for security purposes. I then asked what it was in connection with, to which he replied he was ringing from Lloyds TSB (with whom I do have an account), regarding the 'Brighton Collection Centre' (whatever this may be). I did assume it to be a purchase or something, and I did tell him I am in France, and haven't used my UK bank card to buy anything. He did seem keen and asked again, but I told him it was strange how he was ringing me up for my details! I then pointed out how it was very strange for him to ring at 9pm: since when did anyone from a bank (not even in India would you get a call at that time!) work that late? I refused to give it to him, and in an attempt at sounding authentic (he almost had me fooled), he said: "very well then sir, if you are going to be like that, I'm afraid I'm going to have to end this call, and I advise you to check your statements". I wished him "good luck" and hung up.

Judging by what I have read on here, it really is a scam. I have rang the number a few times in an attempt for them to ring back (which they would do if they were real), and a few moments ago, I rang and it went into an automated message which said something like I had rang on behalf of Lloyds TSB [do I even work for them?!] and they would attempt to call me back later.

Don't fall for it, or if you are curious, follow it through with completely false details!

I just checked with Lloyds TSB by calling the 0845 3 000 000 number on their website. 08703665378 is a legitimate number, it's for the card services department. It does not help that the number they call *from* is not the number they want you to call back on.

That said, I invite anyone who reads this to never give out your details unless you are certain and feel free to check with Lloyds TSB yourselves. No-one at the other end should be offended about your being security-conscious. After all, I and everyone on this site who say it's an ok number could be working the scam too. ;)

I work at Lloyds Tsb Collections.

It is legit. It is for lloyds tsb.
It is collections to collect money you owe... so you must be in debt in some way with the bank.

    they are open from 8am - 9pm

ovb to cover all the diffferent times thier wide range of different customers may be available to talk.

The security questions are nothing but your 1st line of adress postcode and date of birth and they HAVE to be asked due to the data protection act and are for your benefit.

We have allll your info on screen and once id is confirmed we can give you any of it.... so if u happened to lose your mobile and whoever thiefed it picked up... they could quite easily have all ur bank account details.

This is why those questions are asked.

If u are worried its not lloyds. Call the number on ur statements to speak to someone. - If your bank is calling u - it is important.

    hope that helps.

Hi all, This number rings me once a day everyday 01273743574, At fist I just ignored it but over the weeks it gets very annoying, So this morning I picked the phone up to tell them to stop! Because there is nothing wrong with my account, I know that there's no problem with it because I spoke to the real call center earlier this week who told me that they have NO IDEA! whom this caller is, Anyway I picked up the phone and he said that he's from lloyds tsb and can I give him my details/ID etc, I just said NO! ... Then he said ...Well I can not discuss the matter with you, unless you give me your post code etc, I told him about this web page & all the aboth comments & that I dont wanna give any details to him and if there is any problem to please send me a letter instead of harassing me with endless messages on my answering machine .......he went quiet then said " so you dont want to give me your details then" I said NO....he put the phone down on me lol

Yes this is a lloyds number for the collections centre in Brighton..
I have had many dealing with them over the last year or so and the collection centre itself is a joke..they send letters sometimes with a number, sometime without, you ring them back on this number and they are so organised they have to put you back on hold for 10 mins to look up your details, when 2 hours earlier they ran me needing to speak to me urgently!!!Very rarely can you speak to someone who speaks good English..and as for their handling of peoples bank accounts, thats another thing in itself. I have just made an official complaint against their conduct.Anyway I read above do i ignore this number or not some people are asking? but the collections centre handles peoples accounts when they are overdrawn or some other kind of problem with their account, so ignoring these numbers may burn a big hole in your pocket in bank charges if problems are ignored. I can vouch for that from personal exeperinces with LLoyds....SO EVERBODY BE WARNED...

If you ever receive a call or letter from these people, go straight to the Debt Collection Industry forums at the Consumer Action Group website.

LTSB's dubious business practices are well known there.

Then again, search online and you'll find cases of LTSB routinely lying, laying off thousands of staff members, breaking UN Sanctions Law, advising customers how to get round the UK tax laws by setting up offshore accounts, alienating the entire Islamic community by pressurising the IBB (Islamic Bank of Britain) to close the accounts of a legitimate charity then trying to lie about them doing it, and driving people to commit suicide.

This is the kind of company that Gordon Brown is propping up, and all of that is available to read online, right now.  And all of it has happened in the space of one year!

    Ooooh dear LTSB...

Looks like there's some more sackings on the cards - I'm not sympathetic.

As of yesterday, those share prices are beginning to tumble towards that 30p low again.

I hope you're not going to ask the government for another multi-billion handout, and if you do, I hope Gordon Brown tells you to [***] off this time.
