I have had many calls to this number but no one at my address has made them.
So, who is 08712460052?

I have just noticed the same thing - lots of calls to 08712 460052 that I didn't make and checking the date and time of the calls I realised it was the alarm engineer checking my house alarm when he was here servicing it.  We use St John Security.

Do you have a house alarm?  Is it the same company?

I am a bit annoyed that they use a premium rate phone line to check the line, and I have never noticed it appear on my bill before but as I have switched to a free call plan since their last visit it shows up more now.

I've just noticed the same number on my bill.  When the alarm engineer serviced the alarm the number appeared 11 times on my bill at 15p a time.  Since then it appears most saturdays at about 9.20pm, once at 15p.

Outrageous.  Is this some kind of a con?

BT has been charging me for calls made to this 'special service' number since 14 Dec 2010.  I have got nowhere trying to call BT about it so this time I'm writing to them.

I also have St john's security, and last month had 72 calls logged to 0871 246 0052 and 34 calls logged to 0871 246 0053, at 17p a time. Not enough to break the bank, but a problem to resolve.
st john's says it is due to fluctuations on the line, and every time there is a fluctuation the line treats it as being down, and reconnects. I'm not sure where the responsibilty lies - with St John's, with the phone line, or even with the electricity supply.
Nor do I know if there is a consumer body I can go to to get redress.
any ideas as to which utility might be responsible for this?

Again, this appears to be a line connected to my alarm. Originally, a security company was notified when the alarm went off. I have cancelled this service but still the line is tested.
