    hassled one
Hi I have been hassled by baycorp on numerous occasions on my mobile phone about a Telstra bill from 2008 which they claim is mine ?? never owned a Telstra mobile or home phone for that matter so they should back off and stop trying to run me off the road and stealing my wheels off my car ! yes you heard right they have been harassing me for over 12 months about a debt belonging to a woman with the last name of Peters ????????????? who is this ms Peters ??? I  only found out it was barcorp doing all of these things through a private investigator he said I should go to the police about it as the debt is an old one and not mine .  So people report them to the police and then they will leave you alone , I don't care if they are legit they have caused me to have a stroke and end up in hospital as I thought I might have forgotten a debt ?? but never do .

    Why me
I had a call that my phone told me was a "Private" number and the person calling was being very secretive and not wanting to give out any detail but needing my DOB before proceeding, but left this 1300 730 522.

They asked me to quote a reference which I did and then needed my personal info to proceed.

No one should ever provide name, address, DOB etc to a stranger over the phone FULL STOP.

I have no debts, and over the past three weeks have noticed at least 3 -4 calls a week from strangers calling on "Private" or "Overseas" numbers. As the saying goes, If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck its probably a duck.

I would think that anyone who is supposedly collecting a debt would first send you a letter, with details of that debt, that asks you to call them.  Instead of constant phone harassment.

If you are a legit company that is fine but cold calling numbers on the do not call register is still illegal.

These ass****** have been calling for the past few weeks and leaving blank voicemails.
Today an asian girls abruptly leaves a voicemail asking to call 1300 730 522 along with a refrence number.
Frankly speaking these Baycorp guys also need to abide by ASIC rules and stop fishing for information when they have NO EVIDENCE of whom they are calling.
Do not return their calls and do not answer NO CALLER ID or BLOCKED number calls.
You are not oblidged to do so...
Contact Veda Advantage and Fair Trading office and write a complaint and make sure you keep this complaint safe incase you have a default listed in your credit file which then need s to be disputed and removed from your credit file.

    Dear Baycorp;
If you were only following leads you were provided by the original Creditor, there wouldn't be a problem. It is apparent you generate your OWN database, using only the name provided for the Debtor, and ALL telephone directory matches for that name, who you repeatedly harass with unwanted calls until the called party proves they are NOT the person you are seeking, or one of recipients eventually caves in the face of the continuing harassment, and seeks to resolve the outstanding debt.
Since a person who is deliberately trying to escape a debt is unlikely to promptly and willingly acknowledge that debt to a "cold call", and innocent mistakenly targeted individuals would be unwise to provide ANY personal information (which might establish they are NOT the target) to a stranger on the phone, the result is that you are harassing MULTIPLE strangers on an ongoing basis, for matters they have no involvement with, and YOU have no basis to associate them with.
For people like myself on a permanent disability pension due to a serious psychological disorder, calls out of the blue identifying me by name, and seeking personal information, are enormously distressing. For this reason, my telephone number is on the "Do Not Call" register. Whether you are seeking to sell me something (Telemarketers), recruit my support (Lobby groups and politicians), collect donations (Charities), gather information (Market Research), recover unpaid money (Debt Collectors), or collect my personal details for illegal purposes (Scammers), the answer is the same.   DO   NOT    CALL !
Some organisations and purposes identified above are exempt from penalties under the Do Not Call Legislation, but your practise of calling strangers is clearly not one of them. Your conduct in doing so is unwarranted, unacceptable, and unconscionable. Full stop.

Call received from an unidentified number. Female caller with a mild Indian (?) accent, identified herself as 'Amy' from Baycorp, and advised that the call was being recorded (for training & QA purposes). Call quality was clear, with no delay, indicating it originated within Sydney.
Caller identified me by name (which I confirmed), and asked me to provide my D.O.B. to verify my identity. I declined, asking her to provide the D.O.B. she was seeking to match, which I would confirm or reject. She refused (PHISHING ALERT!).
I asked the reason for the call and she said it was a 'business matter', but when asked, refused to identify the client or nature of the debt they were seeking to recover (Baycorp are a debt collection agency). I asked how my name was associated with the debt, she refused to answer, saying she was only responsible for the 'initial verification process'. I asked whether the debt was associated with me by name, or by my address, but she refused to answer. I asked whether the debt was associated with a previous resident who I identified by name (knowing they are a debt collection target), but she refused to answer. I asked where she got my name and number, she advised they were contacting all people with my name, using details taken from 'a public database' (the phone book).
I said that since she was unable to give me any information, she was a stranger to me, so I would not be giving her any of my information. She asked me to call back on the above number (confirming it is only a local call charge), and quote reference number 2000_99xxx. I told her that, since she would not provide any information about the alleged debt, I would not be calling back, and hung up.
I suggest anyone receiving a similar call should do the same (especially if you have undischarged debts).
Despite this general advice, and this being about the 6th time Baycorp have called me over the past 3 years, I called the Baycorp complaints department directly (1300-305-087), with a view to identifying the reason I was being called, and ensuring it did not happen again in the future. This can also be done online, via their website (http://www.baycorp.com.au/complaints#complaints). Given the reference number I provided, the Baycorp representative confirmed the original call DID originate from them, using a database associated with the debt (compiled by them) with telephone numbers of all people listed for the name they were seeking. By an exchange of partial details, we were able to establish I am not the person they were seeking, and she agreed to remove my details from their database. She had no record of any previous calls, so whatever matters they were associated with, were either subsequently resolved elsewhere, or had been re-sold back onto the collections market.
In all fairness, the person I spoke to was courteous and helpful, but contacting me in the first place caused me unwarranted concern, wasted my time, and put me to the expense of a return call I should never have been subjected to. It also breached the "Do Not Call" listing of my phone, for a purpose not exempted by the legislation, as there is no basis for believing my telephone number is associated with any business or transaction they may have an interest in. This practise is unconscionable, and must not be allowed to continue.
PS - Dear Baycorp - despite the much higher billable rate for my professional time, at the present minimum wage, you owe me $8.44 for my time, plus 28c for expenses incurred = $8.72. Don't call me again unless it is to settle your account. Have a nice day :)
