I called the ATO and asked them if this was legit. They said yes. I also asked if they recognised the 1300 852 232 number i was given and again the answer was yes - legit.

Friends its not a scam.  I rang 131020 and waited until I got to speak with someone.  They confirmed the number 130852232 is definitely a tax office number, and those good fellows are trying to reunite you with lost super.

My wife has recieved messages to call this number twice in the past 3 months. I've reported it as a scam to the ATO who advised me that the number is NOT registered with them and thanked me for reporting it. If the tax office want to contact you, they will send you a letter as always, they dont phone you! SCAM...

DO NOT RING THE NUMBER!!!! For enquiries on Superannuation go to the official ATO site and then call the number listed therein, or check the Super section of their website. Do not EVER give private information to ANYONE that coldcalls. The scammers themselves are clearly deluging this site with false assertions to lull the gullible into a sense of false security. Again, DO NOT RING THE NUMBER!!!!

I got this message this week - rang the ATO and was told it was an identity theft attempt and NEVER give out TFN. Be warned.
All these positive responses are obviously the scammers - if you ring you deserve the consequences

They called again today - different name same number. This time I rang the number - has ATO intro and all stuff about listening for training purposes. I spoke to a woman - when I suggested it was ID fraud she tried to convince me otherwise ( obviously) and gave me supposed ATO phone no.s to ring. I said I had rung ATO and she said I was being ridiculous. When I suugested that if she was ATO she had all my info and to send it to me by mail she hung up !!`

Hi, I got the same as others, a message left on my work number asking me to contact 1300852232. I am a Australian Government employee and thought it odd. Of course I'm going to give out that info....NOT.

I contacted the ATO on 131020 as per the listed number on www.ato.gov.au and asked about the call.
It turns out to be (as listed by others on this site) a number to assist with lost superannuation.

No matter what, as a personal practice NEVER give this type of info out under these type of circumstances. Always verify who you are speaking to and confirm the identity by calling the main number of the organisation, NOT THE NUMBER THE CALLER GIVES YOU, and asking for that person.

OK, it may be legit in this case, but it's a pretty shabby practice and doesn't encourage people to protect their identity.

Just remember, once your identity is compromised BAD THINGS may result, like credit rating damage or far worse.

Well, I have the same story, so I called to ATO. They told me they had no calls registered against my name, and said it sounded like a scam. They referred it to the department that deals with attempted fraud. My advice would definately be to be very, very careful about giving any personal details on this number. And think about it - I have nothing to gain by advising caution, but fraudsters would have a lot to gain by managing to persuade people on this forum that the number is legitimate!

I had a call from someone claiming to be from the ATO re superannuation. Masked caller ID.
She wanted to verify my details and required my date of birth & address.
I told her i needed more details re the enquiry as I've never received a call from the ATO in my life. She was sticking to her script.
I asked her if she had a number or callback option to validate her story and she said she was in Hobart and only able to make outbound calls however I could call 1300852232 which is based in South Australia.
She said that she understood my reluctance and would send me a letter instead.
I called the 1300852232 number and to make sure it was the ATO, I gave my TFN, and she asked my name, and i gave my first name if she could provide my surname. She did! That was enough to green the light the validity of the call.
Turns out they were advising me about lost super. As I had rolled over all of the lost super 3 months ago, their files were a little behind the times. Anyhow my advice is that if you get a call from this number use the call back option. Never give your details to anyone that calls you over the phone.

I Just got a call from the supposed ATO office at 1412 today. I cant see the number listed on the ATO tax office- Feels dodgy

I just received a similar message.  I called the ATO on 132861.  They confirmed that I had been called as part of an outbound lost super campaign.  I think it's ok, but if you are concerned, call back a relevant number like 13 10 20 and speak to someone (http://www.ato.gov.au/corporate/content.asp?d ... mfp=001&st=&cy=).  Chances are you have lost super, even if you don't want to use the number left in the voicemail.  I know I do.

I received the exact same type of call and when I refused to provide any details, the person on the phone said I could verify by calling 1300 852 232.
I called back and started to answer some of the identity question but I got really suspicious when they wanted to know how much I received from tax refund last year and by which medium. I felt really uncomfortable and hung up.

If you go to ATO website, and go to superseeker, they have an automated phone system (13 28 65) where you enter your TFN and DOB yourself to find lost super.

What I don't understand is, if the call from this 1300 number was ligit, why didn't the person on 1300 number suggest or encourage me to go to the website or call the 13 number to do it myself??? Wouldn't these two means suppose to serve the same purpose?

Either ATO are being COMPLETELY incompetent with the way they implement this campaign or it is a SCAM.

Got a Call from the 1300 number - I was wary at first so i did some homework - I then tracked them through to the ATO and it seems legit! They had on File log notes as to who called me and when.
In the end I had 5 lost super funds to contact.
I am cautious at the best of times.

Shame there is such mixed messages in this thread, as it makes it confusing.  

I rang the ATO after receiving call from supposed ATO guy (John Leung) but didn't give out info and asked for dial back number (which he gave as 1300 852 232). Being suspicious, I rang the ATO Super line (13 10 20) and they had no record of the contact or awareness of the 1300 number.

Smells like a scam to me... even if they can tell you about your lost super, which you helped them to find by providing all your details!  You can do this by the ATO web site's Super Seeker...

I rang the tax office enquiries number, 13 28 69. Give them a call and they will confirm that it is the ATO calling. Look up the website, ato.gov.au for self-assurance.

It was about lost superannuation.

I have received 2 of these calls, one message and one that I answered. I am cautious because I know that identity fraud is getting bigger in oz... They claim it is about lost super and may even have useful information which they retrieve from the ATO website, but their call back number is not listed any where on the ATO website...a 13 number is listed, not a 1300 number.
As many people are suggesting, NEVER GIVE OUT PERSONAL INFORMATION TO ANYONE WHO CANNOT PROVE WHO THEY ARE.

If you ever get a phonecall from someone claming to be from the ATO ALWAYS simply say to them "i own a horse" and then hang up. this will prevent them from calling you ever again.

I got the same message, and gave the ATO Feedback and complaints (1800 199 010) number a call. The first thing the ATO asks is for you to input your tax file number, so don't believe it has to be a scam just because you have to give out your TFN. I spoke to a rep and they confirmed that IT IS A ATO NUMBER. Instead of just leaving a "it's a scam" message on this forum, give the ATO a call and put your mind to rest. P.S. have a think, have you changed your job in the last 5 years and not rolled your super over?

1) I've never once been cold called or unsolicited by the ATO in my entire life as an Australian citizen.

2) This number doesn’t appear to be listed anywhere on either the ATO or the SuperSeeker websites.

3) If the ATO wanted to inform me of lost super (or anything else for that matter) they would do this by mail.

4) Lastly, I'm also very suspicious of some of the comments I've seen from people either claiming to be from the ATO or that this number is somehow linked to the ATO's lost super program i.e. this is an anonymous forum and is not linked to the ATO in anyway. And these messages could be coming from anyone e.g. the scammers themselves, or simply miss-informed people.
