Call is from NYSUT - New York State United Teachers or other public employee advocate group. There is a push to institute a tier 6 retirement system  for all public employees. If you do the research, Teacher salaries suck compared to the salaries that the same amount education, training an time would otherwise yield.  It is because teachers want to have a positive impact on society and a carrot of a reasonable pension that makes them give up a much more lucrative salary to educate our children.  A few bucks less in you state taxes would have a major impact on what type of person is molding your children 8 hours a day.  Over the last few years we have seen the effect of "teacher bashing" in our schools.  Tier 6 would only make it get worse.  It may be too late to reverse the trend but I wouldn't give up.  Think about that.    I cant speak for the other areas of public employment that are under the same retirement system, only for those involved in education.  Sorry about the political commentary but I've been there and truly believe that if the taxpayers really knew the facts, instead of what the media publishes, they would make the best decisions for everyone, especially our kids.

Teacher's saleries suck?...most public school teachers are over paid !

They couldn't pay me enough to put up with some of the crap public school teachers deal with.  Especially those teaching grades 7-12.  Most of the ones I know have to go to mandatory inservices every Saturday and have been threatened and/or assaulted at least once.  No thanks....

Overpaid? 40K for a job that requires a masters plus more hours of professional devlopment each year to keep your certificate, often at your own expense? What other profession requires this?

You didn't read what he just said. Graduate with a Bachelor's and Master's in Business? Start at 100 K. Same from an education program (by the way you are REQUIRED to have a Master's degree to keep your teaching certification)....some start at 40k.  You will retire after 35 years at about 60k.

I received a call from (518) 640-2030 on 10/8/2014 at 8:19 PM. It was man with a creepy voice and I can hear female voice in the background. When I asked who is calling? He said -"AFLCIO" which was hard to figure out. I questioned -AFLCIO? and as I was about to say I have nothing to do with it he cut the line off.
Some people really know how to waste the most valuable thing in their life - TIME.

I'm sorry, but the NY state system of payment fro teachers is fine compared with the salaries of business in general. Yes, they deal with a bunch of crap from kids, they have to do lesson plans at home, and all the rest of the issues I hear spouted. But they also have a salary that is commensurate with the salaries you receive after graduating with a business degree, they get job security, (something I'd love after having tow companies I work for go into either bankruptcy or layoffs.) and they get the Summer to gain extra cash. (I work with Jones Beach lifeguards who are teachers, and they earn an additional $15k minimum in the Summer.) So please save your calls. Teachers don't have it "worse" than the rest of society. They can have a pretty decent and secure life. Do we all want more money, sure! But the majority of us outside teaching  are definitely not doing much better than teachers these days!!

Aah. Downstate- a whole different salary world then the rest of the state...
