Called several times. Actually sat through a 2 minute greeting, and then hung up. No VM several times.

Third party verification service, that needed professional reference for a previous coworker who listed me as a reference on his resume. They called me, left a voice message to return call at a different number. I returned the number, provided the name of the coworker that they mentioned in the voicemail, and was able to provide the reference interview within 10 questions shortly after that.

This is a legit company.  They called me 07/19/2016 as a reference for a friend that is job hunting.  The lady had a very strong Indian accent and was hard to understand her but she was asking me professional questions about my friend.    If the number calls, answer it....a friend may be depending on you!

Was initially wary and nearly didn't answer as unusual foreign number. Had a call asking for some reference info for an old employee.  Asked to send over something by email but never received it.  I don't really think it's legit as person spoke terrible English and didn't really sound like he was writing/typing my email address properly.  A bit annoying - if anyone is going to farm out services like background checks, I'd make sure they did it a bit more thoroughly than that!  Jokers

normally I never answer an unfamiliar caller ID. I work in a Federal law enforcement agency, and decided to answer a call from "Sterling". (slow day here)  The voice (from India) started out with "I need you to verify the birthdays of your employees". (All 300 ?) I told him no, we do not give out personal info. He insisted that I give it to him,   I asked him the reason, and he declined to give one. I hung up.
He called back and said if he read down the list could I verify the birthdays?  I responded absolutely not.  and told him to write a letter. He then wanted our address AND PHONE NUMBER !  (???) I advised him that his next call would be considered harassment, and hung up.

Like I said I never answer an unfamiliar Caller ID, but this time it was fun.

Got a call from 212-736-5100.  Supposedly they were from Sterling according to the voicemail.  Gave me  866- 455-5782 number to call quoting a file number.  I didn't call it.  Called Sterling security through their 800- number on their website and they hadn't heard of this 866- number.  Got a call back from a guy in Atlanta (area code 770) that worked for Sterling and filled him in also.  My gut told me this was a scam.  It still tells me it is a scam.

Called saying they want to verify information for my employer. I've been self employed for the last 8 years.

This number called my personal cell at 3AM and woke me up! They left a 30 second voicemail of nothing. I have blocked them.

This number calls a couple of times a month 212-736-5100 (Sterling Testing Systems/Private Investigations) and the voice is hard to understand at times. They call saying they have one of our press release (fraud) and that this person applied for a job and they want to see if it is the same person.  They are calling a press office and they want to verify someones birthday and social security number. They are not giving me the info they tell me a name and want me to give them that info.  The person they ask about we have yet to find. Really!!! I tell this same guy the same thing everytime he calls to stop calling because no one will give him any information.  Call the appropriate department.

This company called 5 times in one day. The person who called did not speak American English well, and it was impossible to understand what they wanted. Not sure why they would call a public elementary school for employment verification. All employment verification is done through the school district headquarters.

Got Several calls from this number this morning, hung up the first time and they kept calling back.

received a call twice asking for personal info on a previous employee. I refuse to give any personal info, even on behaviour, without proof positive. As an employer I feel it is my responsibility to protect current and past workers from callers whom I have no idea who they are... they can say anything, especially if trying to collect monies, track someone down for legal reasons or personal reasons that are none of my business, etc. Day one I gave caller my biz email to make this request formal and I'd be calling the person in question to confirm. Day two person called back saying my email doesn't work. Well that's a 1st as I get a great many a day. Gave biz fax number & website with biz address saying there are other avenues to make this request formal, accountable and traceable.. And said until further confirmation on who and what I'd be giving zero personal info on any current or past worker. Yes the caller was very polite but you have to be to elicit info. And yes she was hard to understand re the accent but I have trouble understanding some of my employees whether they're from Honduras or Russia or India. Basically my role is to support my workers first and foremost, not cold callers.

received a call from them and asking whether I am the person with the name. After I said yes they hang up.
