Got a call from the same number (+600388862222) this morning at 10am, saying that a car that was rented with my photocopy IC has been involved in a car accident in Penang. I was in KL at the time the "accident" allegedly happened, so I was naturally surprised and in slight distressed. The operator then said he will patch me to another Sergeant and asked me to repeat what he taught me to say (my full name, IC, car plate of the vehicle Toyota Vios WLA 7966) to the next person in charge.

I got patched through (in 5 seconds) and I asked for second person's name (Sergeant Wan) and asked if he could call me back in 5 minutes, because I want to know if it's not a prank/ scam. He asked why would I think so, and I told him the number seems like a KL extension while they told me it's an accident in Penang. He reluctantly hung up and call me back in a minute (with another number +60042181822) , but hung up in one ring. I tried called the number again but never got through.

I'm not sure what they are trying to achieve. However, like what Rolland said, the background does sound realistic and that the first person I talked to sounded like a Chinese with fluent Malay.
