Report a phone call from 707-706-2896 and help to identify who and why is calling from this number.
- AngelaSeveral weeks ago, I received a threatening message on my home phone from a man with a thick accent saying I am being investigated and to call him to avoid any further actions from the government against my social security...of which he repeated the last four digits. A few days later what sounded like the same man called from a different number telling me I am going to be sued and that I should give him a call and if not, "God rest my soul." I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
Today while having a lunchbreak at work, I noticed a number coming through with a 707 area code. I did not answer but saw they left a message. While having my lunch break, my mother sends me an email saying a man named John Woods called from (707) 706-2896 trying to get contact information about me. He hung up from my mother and called my grandmother's phone (who shares the same house with my parents) and called her by her name and was leaving a message telling her she's being sued to call him back. My mother called him back and asked why did he hang up from her to call my grandmother and he told her he made a mistake that he was trying to reach me. My mother told him of course that I didn't live there and to stop harassing them. After hanging up from her, I listed to the message that he left on my job's voicemail and of course, it was the same gentleman with the thick accent who phone my home several weeks ago. I called the number back several times, but only get a busy signal.- Caller: Couldn't understand Company sounded like Law Investigation Fraud...something

- Tired of this BS| 3 repliesPlease, as many people as possible who have received calls from these scammers: report them to the FTC and to the Attorney General's office. 707 is a California area code, so report them to the CA Attorney General. Might not hurt to report them to the AG in your own state as well (esp. if it has a consumer protection division or something like that). Anyone else have ideas, I'm all ears. The more leverage we get against these people, the sooner they'll crumble.
These people proved on the phone that they could not hold their own in an exchange; they don't have the truth or the law on their side. Let's put as much pressure on them as we can. Fight back!- Caller: Phony Frauds (CashNetUSA?)
- Angie replies to Tired of this BS| 2 repliesThese same people keep calling myself and my partner saying they will arrest and have an officer at our house and her work place. They have her ssn, our address, our phone numbers, and phone numbers of our friends. i have insisted if i owe a debt, send me documentation, which they will not...they have cussed, and called 42 times in one day...so many calls from one number, i had the number blocked...is there anyway to stop these calls?????
- fight back! replies to AngieBlock their number on your phone and report them to as many people as possible. Here's a post I'm pasting (https://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-707-895-4742) from someone else, with some good advice.
I am sick as [***] of scam artists trying to rip me off. Fight back.
---------------------
If you are targeted by these criminals, be sure to report them to all the following federal and state law enforcement agencies (most of which you can do online or over the phone):
1. The U.S. Secret Service is responsible for protecting the country's financial infrastructure and payment systems from international and domestic threats. Call or write your local Secret Service field office to alert them to the details of this attempted extortion. The addresses and phone numbers for the local Secret Service field offices are listed at http://www.secretservice.gov/field_offices.shtml or in your phone book.
2. Alert the FBI at https://tips.fbi.gov Be sure to tell the FBI that you are being targeted by extortionists over the phone. And if the crooks claim to be law enforcement or lawyers, officers of the court or bankers, be sure to include that information in your report.
3. File a complaint with your local police. Most police departments will take a report over the phone. Be sure to tell them that you're being targeted by an extortionist and give them all the details.
4. File a complaint your state's attorney general, the contact information for whom is at www.wvago.gov
5. File a complaint online with The Federal Trade Commission at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en
If these crooks call back, promise them nothing, pay them nothing and tell them nothing other than that you know they're a scam and that you've reported them to law enforcement. (And be sure to report them to all the agencies above each time they call you.)
By the way, here's just a small sample of numbers used by this particular group of scammers. Read the reports and you'll see the same pattern time and again -- phony organization names, thick foreign accents, and oddly worded threats that are so melodramatic and ridiculous that it's laughable:

Consumer Alert: Attorney General warns Kansans of debt collection scam
January 29, 2010 -- Attorney General Steve Six is cautioning Kansas consumers about telephone calls from apparent fake debt collectors who are impersonating law enforcement officers in an effort to extort money from consumers. Consumers are warned to not submit payments to these fraudulent debt collectors.
When calling, the scammers most often state they are attempting to collect a debt related to an internet payday loan obtained by the consumer, but which the consumer never repaid. Consumers state they have never obtained such a loan or paid off the loan years ago. The scam artists have most recently identified themselves as ACS, National Affidavit Processing Department and United Financial Crime Division, but may use additional phony names. It appears the phone numbers used by the scammers are “spoofed” numbers, so that the number appearing on a consumer’s caller ID is not the actual number of where the call originated. It appears the calls in question may be originating from outside the United States.
When questioned, the individual calling refuses to disclose the full name or address of the collection agency they claim to represent. These scammers have been able to provide consumers with identifying information, such as the consumer’s social security number, home address, e-mail address, names of family members and the consumer’s computer IP address. Since the callers are able to provide valid personal information, consumers may become confused and believe they are being contacted in regard to a legitimate debt.
If the initial debt collection scam is unsuccessful, consumers have been re-contacted months later with the scammers posing as law enforcement officers or officers of the court. Typically, the consumer is threatened with arrest for fraud or some other fictitious crime unless the consumer agrees to immediately wire money via Western Union. The fictitious officers strive to frighten and confuse consumers into compliance by using legal sounding terms such as “We’re filing an affidavit against you” or by stating a lawsuit has been or is in the process of being filed against the consumer.
A hallmark of each scam has been calling consumers repeatedly at their place of employment. This scam hit home when an employee of the Kansas Attorney General’s Office was repeatedly called both on her cell phone and at work. Despite the employee’s repeated verbal disputes, the caller refused to provide any identifying information to allow her to send a written dispute. The scammer also continued to call her numerous times a day regarding a payday loan she denied obtaining. Two months later, she was again contacted by telephone by an individual identifying himself as an “officer”.
“I denied owing the debt and refused to pay without being provided validation of the debt. I was then told, ‘If that’s the case, I will have local law enforcement come to your place of business and drag you out kicking and screaming’,” stated the employee.
“It is important for consumers to know their rights under the law,” Attorney General Six said. “If a consumer is receiving calls from a debt collection company and believe it is a scam, I encourage them to contact our office immediately.”
Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), collectors are required to send consumers a written notice within five days of the initial contact. The notification should contain information such as the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor to whom the debt is owed and a statement informing the consumer they have thirty days to contact the debtor in writing to dispute the debt or request validation of the debt. In addition, legitimate debt collectors are prohibited by the FDCPA from making false or misleading representations, such as the consumer has committed a crime, implying nonpayment will result in the consumer’s arrest, or using the threat of violence.

http://www.ksag.org/page/consumer-alert-attor ... collection-scam - BubblesI have had to deal with these harassing phone threats for 6 months. They call my job and leave a message that they are from a legal department. I know they are a scam and I called them back and told to LAY OFF or I will sue them. They still persist. The people who call can hardly speak english so I know they are a scam

- JTMy mom just recieved a call from 707-706-2896 saying that I did a cash advance in April 2010 of $300 through Cash Advance USA and I have not paid for it and now it is $445 and they were going to press legal charges. The guys name was Shane Miller for the Low investigation headquarters. When I tried calling it back it sounded like the guy was in his car and when asked to speak with Shane Miller he asked my name and I said once I get to talk to Shane I will give him my name. He then stopped talking. I hung up and tried calling back 3 times and then 1 on my sisters phone. No Answer. I knew it was a scam so then I proceeded to call 10 more times to annoy him...still no answer of course.

- JulieMy grandmother got a call from "James Brown," a man with a very strong middle eastern accent, telling her that I was in a great deal of legal trouble because of an internet loan I owed on. Well, I have never gotten an internet loan, so I immediately called the number he had left with her. The call was answered by a man with a middle eastern accent. I asked to speak to "James Brown" and he asked who I was. I told him it was none of his concern and that I would like to speak to "James." A "different" man with the exact same voice and accent then got on the phone and after I asked him how he had gotten all of my private information he told me "Don't worry about it, because you will be going to jail in a very short amount of time." This obviously concerned me, so I did a reverse phone number look up on whitepages.com and when it came up that the number was unpublished, I became even more suspicious. I then googled the number and came across this website with testimonials that could have been written from my own experience. My grandmother and I were both skeptical enough not to give out any information, so I don't believe I will have any issue with stolen identity, but I would urge anyone who gets a call similar to this to be very cautious in what you say. Even a little information can be used to find everything they need to know about you.

- Really People?? replies to maryHe told me James Brown, too. The moron called me company number-that has an extension, and a recording that says my name...and not only can he not speak English well, but he also cant understand it well. He called me the wrong name...but claims he has a lawsuit against me and my social security number, and the only way i can avoid going to court is by calling him and taking care of this over the phone. AND i should not ignore this call. Hmmmmmm......at least state the correct name, moron!!! The wierd thing is that i looked up OCS-Oscar Consulting Services, and there is really a law firm with this name. I bet they would be happy to hear this creep is using their company to scam people.
- Say What???We too have received calls from angry men who have very poor communications skills. They have violated nearly every fair debt collection practice in existence (i.e. calling outside the hours of 8am and 7pm, disclosing "debts owed" by someone else, threatening to sue, refusing to properly identify themselves, refusing to verify the alleged debt in writing, threatening lawsuits, using the telephone to annoy/harrass, etc). Please get as much information from them without revealing any of your own and use it to file a complaint with the FTC. You can do that by clicking here https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en#last

I have been calling them back everyday with prank phone calls, from a blocked number....sometimes several times in a row. I have had co-workers call them also, and say what ever they feel like. - Irate PersonThe above is exactly what they did. Very heavy middle-eastern accent left messages on my cell phone over past couple of weeks. Very hard to understand so did not call back. Now they called my job. He used name "Bran Lee" and said I did an internet payday loan back in April 2010. I said I DID NOT. I had filled out a questionnaire around that time, and received so many spam email responses that I deleted that email account, but that I did NOT accept any loan from anyone and they needed to give me the details of how much & when! He was at 707-706-2896 but then had me call 707-360-0274 to verify but they would hardly give me info except to say that $315 was deposited into my account. I told him HOLD ON and verified while he was on the phone that I DID NOT receive any funds as stated and they needed to prove it. He told me he had no say in it to call back the other guy. I went over this same info with him & he offered to put a supervisor on the phone. I said that would be FINE. The supervisor still said they would be taking me to court and that the cops would be at me door and at my job to arrest me and to have a nice life! OMG! Scariest part is they had ALL my personal info, phone #s, SS#, address, and even BANK INFO! I will be reporting them tonight and contacting my bank to be sure they cannot gain any access. This is SCARY!

I finally got through to the company and they would not talk to me. IDK what to do, and I already gave them my checking information. Does anyone have any advice?
