Then asked if I have ever been turned down for life insurance. I could tell this was a scam, so I didn't respond. This phrasing is a major red flag for the well-known "Can You Hear Me?" scam. Scammers use this exact routine—pretending to be an agent with a bad connection—to trick you into saying "yes" so they can record your voice and use it to authorize unauthorized charges. This could also be a phishing tactic. Either way your best defense is to hang up immediately.
