A debt discharged in a Federal Bankruptcy Court, is just that, discharged.  The creditor is allowed a time during the bankruptcy process to file and say they want to be paid and request any money that may be available as an asset.  This is the creditor's meeting.  If a creditor attempts collection efforts on a discharged debt, the debtor can file a motion with the court, reporting the action and asking that the case be reopened to address the matter. The bankruptcy court will often do so to ensure that the discharge is not violated. The discharge constitutes a permanent statutory injunction prohibiting creditors from taking any action, including the filing of a lawsuit, designed to collect a discharged debt. A creditor can be sanctioned by the court for violating the discharge injunction. The normal sanction for violating the discharge injunction is civil contempt, which is often punishable by a fine.  

This number showed up on my cell phone today.  I have no idea why they would be calling.  I just bought a house and the credit report shows my current creditors and the amount I owe.  I don't owe anything else.

number comes up and i just let it go to voice mail land they leave no message.  If it was a legitimate debt they would leave messages to return phone calls.  Which has never happened. I just do not answer that phone number they don't even leave messages!!!!

Portfolio Recovery is a junk debt collector, DO NOT DEAL WITH THEM. When they call after hours or you see that an unknown caller keeps calling and calling there are ways to deal with them.  

Portfolio Recovery uses illegal practices that can cost them up to $1000.00 per violation. They already have been sued. I reported them to the FTC and you should too -- http://www.ftc.gov/.

They have called me continuously all through the night. Legally they can only call between 8am through 9pm. After 9 these bottom feeders block their id and it shows up unknown so they call all through the night. This is illegal! http://www.fair-debt-collection.com/rules/collection-calls-5.html

You can report them to your Attorney General who then can supply a subpoena to give to your phone carrier who then can trace the calls from unknown callers or callers who show up as "No ID"

Little does the Portfolio idiots know, my phone only allows calls from people on my contact list, all other calls are blocked and the phone doesn't ring at all. I have a special voice mail program where you can delete messages without hearing them.

Importantly, know that these people are NOT the original creditor, therefore you have NO contract with them. The original creditor has long  since written the debt off and in a round about way received their monies through their tax returns.

DO NOT DEAL WITH PORTFOLIO OR ANY OTHER JUNK DEBT COLLECTORS they are NOT the original creditor you dealt with.
