The following message was received Tuesday, 12/15 at 11:38AM from a man with a thick East Indian accent.
"Hello!  This message is intended to contact you.  My name is ???? (inaudible) and I'm calling regarding an enforcement action executed by the U.S. Treasury intending to receive attention.  Ignoring this will be an intentional attempt to avoid initial appearance before a magistrate judge or a grand jury for a federal criminal offense.  My number is 1-772-408-4731.  I repeat 1-772-408-4731.  I'd like you to cooperate with us and help us to help you.        Thank you."  They called back twice.  I called back this time, having gotten these calls before (I have four saved to my voicemail - they are identical to above....same guy, same accent, same type of message although different phone number before.  I told him to stop calling my house, that he was not with the US Treasury and this was a SCAM.  He tried to argue ('no, no, no...ma'am...ma'am how is it you are thinking this...?') and talk over me....I said he had called before, had no case number when asked, that I had contacted the Treasury myself and their scam was all over the internet.  He hung up.  :)

Why are these people allowed to call like this?  I got the same call twice in one day.  After they asked for me, then they mentioned my husband, then my two daughters.  My husband finally said who are you looking for you just keep throwing out names.  The person on the phone kept saying money was owed.  Someone needs to stop these people from calling.  I am sure they are breaking the law with this scan.

This person, saying the exact same thing, has called my house 3x per day for the last week and leaves this message.  How do I make it stop?  I have never answered the call or called back.

I received a message and called back to be told that the police were coming to get me because of some crime I committed, but he wouldn't tell me the crime!  The man who spoke to me had an accent.

Caller said I could pay half of the amount owed.  I asked what my SS number is and he said it is highly confidential.  Asked who my accountant is and he hung up after saying agents will be at my house in 45 minutes to arrest me.   After 3 hours - no agents!!  Surprise, surprise.

I couldn't resist.  Just too much fun.  I called twice and spoke with two different people.  Both Indian.  I informed them immediately I was calling from the U.S. Attorney's Office and the call would be recorded.  First one hung up immediately.  Second one kept going and asked how he could verify I was indeed with U.S.A.G.  Funny that!  I told him where I graduated law school and when.  What U.S. District Court Judge I clerked for.  And then asked which Grand Jury and what locale and was I being charged under 15 U.S.C., 18 U.S.C. or 28 U.S.C.  Of course, the IRS Code is 26 U.S.C., but who would know that except somebody working for the U.S. Treasury.  Full disclosure: I am not with the U.S. Attorney's office, but if they can be silly, why not me?  The man then said he did not want to jeopardize his job by actually discussing any details.  Aw, and it was getting to be so much fun....They really ought to do a better job of brushing up on things if they are going to try to scam Americans.  We will not fall for this crap.  BTW, existence of Grand Jury investigations is secret and disclosing such to anyone is a state or federal crime absent a formal target letter from the USAG.  So, if you get a call, don't be scared.  The IRS never calls you.  They send you a letter and let you sit on hold for an hour.  ROFL.
