Or perhaps you meant "pay their bills", which is a better, albeit tactless point to make.

You seem to ignore that (a) many debt collection agencies are scumbags operating at the limits, or outside of the law; and (b) many people with medical debts have genuine financial hardships that you are happy to ignore.

Case in point, I was told by a supposedly legit debt collector that a warrant had been issued for my arrest. That is not only not true, it is illegal for them to make such a statement. My wife has been chased for debts that we have proof were paid off. English is her second language and she is clearly targeted by some of your peers because of that.

In my case, I had a hernia (not something I asked for or wanted) shortly after a business collapsed, leaving me deeply in debt. We lost our house, have no savings and no assets. My doctor stated that surgery was required immediately - I would literally be risking my life to delay. I very clearly  told the hospital before I went in for surgery that I could not afford to pay for it out of pocket. Post surgery they failed to provide an option for a reasonable payment plan ($500 a month is NOT reasonable) and then sued me.

And you wonder why people don't like debt collectors?

How you do medical bill debt., but tell me I owe Verizon  $1000+. Not too mention I been with Verizon since 2005 lmfaooo,  nice try. Qnd they can't provide any account number etc. in reference to this so called debt  because they want to use it in court against me haha! When I said he's a scam, now he's ready to hang up and tells me to have a nice day!

Sure, they called me too. "This is not a sales call, please call us back..." was the message left. I called and the recording was " you have reached the business line. Press 1 if you know the extension...". I just said, "operator" and got a live person. After some back and forth/cat and mouse I learned that they are the bill collector from a month old co-pay from some blood work. They acted cagey because they were following HIPA policy and can't give out info without verifying to whom they are talking. They are a 3rd party billing agent because the hospital does not do the direct billing.
Such subterfuge, but no big deal. It was a bona fide debt that they were following up on

They are related to Roger William Hospital. The exact number is on my lab. bill. They need your info to be sure they are talking to the right person but I requested for my acct number too for confirmation also. I paid the bill through their automated system.

This HAS to be a scam. I received a medical bill saying I owed $36.19 (originally $1,832, but some was paid and adjusted). This was the phone number on the bill - from Our Lady of Fatima Hospital - with a completely different address than the real Fatima Hospital. I called and I got the same message as john. I left no information and will not be paying this bill. I will check with the BBB because this could well be mail fraud (and worse!).

I just got a voicemail saying my name and asking me to call them back. I have no outstanding medical bills and excellent credit so they have no reason to reach out to me. I'm going to ignore this. Also, I haven't received ANY correspondence in the mail
