    Hope this helps
    The way they are getting your phone number is from a company called accurint.  If anyone ever typed this number in with your name, then it will be associated with you pretty much forever.

    So they are searching the phone number for whoever has the debt, looking for any person who also had that number, and then tracking down the person they found.

    Just ask for their address and send them a VOD (verification of debt).  If they contact you again prior to returning the VOD you can sue them.

    Good luck.

    DO NOT REPEAT MY MISTAKE!
    So I got a call from this number in October, made a google search, found this website, left a comment (see above) about being so smart recognizing a scam phone and kept ignoring the next calls from them. When the amount of calls/voice mails in my phone became ridiculous I did proceed to listening to what they wanted to tell me. It turned out that PG&E didn't properly terminate an account in my name and sent another bill that I never got because of having moved (my fault there). Then they proceeded to hiring Diversified :( PG&E confirmed that to me.
    I am about to try to argue this with PG&E but for now I've got a collection that would've remained unpaid if I kept ignoring these phone calls. I don't know how it is that many people receive this as scam calls - in my case it wasn't. Take time to listen to what they are telling you and think twice about whether you really might have a debt of some sort...

    In my case they are getting GREAT at the SCAM.
    I won't tell my complete name for obvious security reasons, but here is the story:

    Same a above, some automatic service keeps on calling saying that they have an important business message for Jose LastName. I called back to the number and they identified themselves as Diversified. They gave me an address where I used to live 8 years ago briefly and said that I owed almost $100 on a bill. They evidently don't have all the information right because the person thought I lived there months ago. They said that I owed this money to Xcel Energy (which is a legit company in the state I live). I said I would call Xcel directly and find out. The lady was very short and rude and said that the calls will continue until I pay and that she already has my account and rushed to hang up.

    Got into my computer and find more about Diversified and found this is a SCAM.
    I called back minutes later to find out what the deal was and they said they had the wrong Jose LastName. The representative has a wrong MIDDLE INITIAL and she said I will make sure I mark your record and say it is the wrong person.

    I guess they are trying to confirm names and match them with numbers to sell them to other marketing companies and they prepare this entire scheme to confirm.

    JUST NEVER GIVE THEM OTHER INFORMATION they dont have. Let them tell you the information they have.

    We have been getting these phone calls for over 2 years... always asking for the same person who clearly does not live here.  I know for certain it is a scam. They are persistent so that you will get frustrated and slip and give them correct info about yourself just to get them to stop calling you... I can imagine they will continue calling even when you correct them.  My suspicions are that an account number or ss number has been discovered by them and they are just looking for lost pieces to start using your identity. It seems as though there is a sort of method to their pursuit. It is always the same wrong name, with the same letter starting the first and last name-- some sort of code. Another method is wearing you down and making you frustrated enough to answer the call and give out some info for some relief. My advice-- screen ALL calls before answering.  Let friends and family know of your situation so they know what you are doing... it may be a little inconvenient, but a little price to pay for some security.

    Anyone can have an 800 number for $9.95 a month. This is a phishing scam. Be wise.

    Anyone can buy a 800 number for $9.95 a month so don't be intimidated by that. This is a phishing scam. One blogger wrote about checking this out with Chase and I commend him. A bank does not need you ss number.  The last 4 numbers of our ss card or drivers licsence are written on voting applications. Can you imagine how many hands THAT piece of paper passes by? You cannot tell me that everyone who works for the government is trustworthy. We have to have a ss number and DL number to vote and yet our identity can be violated in a second when it gets into the wrong hands. We cannot be naieve!

    We would all do well to screen our calls and tell our friends and families about these calls.  A little inconvenience goes a long way in protecting your identity. Be wise.

    They have broken FDCPA and FCRA laws, by:

    1) Refusing to validate the alledged debt they are calling about
     (Section 809).
    2) Threatening to place derogoratory remarks on your
     credit report on an UNVALIDATED debt (Section 809b).

    Send them this "Drop Dead" letter VIA certified mail and request a return receipt. Keep copies of everything you send:

    VIA CERTIFIED MAIL

    Dear {insert name of collector or company},

    I am writing in response to your (letter or phone call) dated {insert date}, (copy enclosed) because I do not believe I owe what you say I owe.

    This is the first I've heard from you, or any other company on this matter therefore, in accordance with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, Section 809(b): Validating Debts:

    (b) If the consumer notifies the debt collector in writing within the thirty-day period described in subsection (a) that the debt, or any portion thereof, is disputed, or that the consumer requests the name and address of the original creditor, the debt collector shall cease collection of the debt, or any disputed portion thereof, until the debt collector obtains verification of the debt or any copy of a judgment, or the name and address of the original creditor, and a copy of such verification or judgment, or name and address of the original creditor, is mailed to the consumer by the debt collector.

    I respectfully request that you provide me with the following information:

    (1) the amount of the debt;
    (2) the name of the creditor to whom the debt is owed;
    (3) Provide a verification or copy of any judgment (if applicable);
    (4) Proof that you are licensed to collect debts in (insert name of your state)
    Be advised that I am fully aware of my rights under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and the Fair Credit Reporting Act. For instance, I know that:

    because I have disputed this debt in writing within 30 days of receipt of your dunning notice, you must obtain verification of the debt or a copy of the judgment against me and mail these items to me at your expense;
    you cannot add interest or fees except those allowed by the original contract or state law.
    you do not have to respond to this dispute but if you do, any attempt to collect this debt without validating it, violates the FDCPA;
    Also be advised that I am keeping very accurate records of all correspondence from you and your company including recording all phone calls and I will not hesitate to report violations of the law to my State Attorney General, the Federal Trade Commission and the Better Business Bureau.

    I have disputed this debt; therefore, until validated you know your information concerning this debt is inaccurate. Thus, if you have already reported this debt to any credit-reporting agency (CRA) or Credit Bureau (CB) then, you must immediately inform them of my dispute with this debt. Reporting information that you know to be inaccurate or failing to report information correctly violates the Fair Credit Reporting Act § 1681s-2. Should you pursue a judgment without validating this debt, I will inform the judge and request the case be dismissed based on your failure to comply with the FDCPA.

    Finally, if you do not own this debt, I demand that you immediately send a copy of this dispute letter to the original creditor so they are also aware of my dispute with this debt.

    If they refuse to respond to your request for debt validation, continue to call and ding your credit report after you have written proof they have received your letter, you will have legal grounds to sue the &$%#@! out of them:

    You are correct, they are in complete violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practice Act. I believe that the Fair Trade Commission still governs collection agencies in this country and all you have to do is call  them and they will send you the form to file the complaint.  Keep accurate records because there are several attorney's out there that love to pursue FDCPA violations and you could end up getting the debt paid by the collection agency themselves.  Everytime they call me, I lock in their number in my cell phone so that I can prove the times that they call.  I do this because I have an unlimited plan and it does not keep track of my incoming.outgoing calls.

    Here is just a blurb from the FTC websit:

    In 2008, Academy Collection Service, Inc. and its owner, Keith Dickstein, paid $2.25 million to settle FTC charges that Academy collectors violated the FTC Act and the FDCPA while collecting debts, and that Dickstein failed to stop the violations. The settlement order announced today, negotiated by DOJ and the FTC, imposed civil penalties of $375,000 and $300,000, respectively, on Albert S. Bastian and Edward Hurt, who oversaw Academy’s Las Vegas collection center. The judgments were suspended upon payment of $7,500 each, based on their ability to pay. The full judgments will become due immediately if the defendants are found to have misrepresented their financial condition.

    Here is the website that has the complaint and an assistant to help you file it: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/

    I myself plan on following through with the multiple violations, please help stop these people and file a complaint yourself.  All it will cost is time.

    Same as almost everyone here, except they're calling for my adult son, who still lives with us.  Very rude, won't give out information.  They tried to hide behind the 'he's an adult' privacy bit, and actually hung up on me when I started pushing for information.  So then why are you calling my number?  (He has his own number, which of course I won't give out, now that I know.)  The only information I could get out of them (and I called them back 3 three times) was that the company was called Diversified.  Diversified what?  Wouldn't tell me.
    Said they would remove me number when I started to get angry.  We'll see.

    saying I owed money to a big name company I never had an account with (but I do have an account with their wireless service, if you get my meaning).

    They may have left a voicemail on my wireless, but it was vague and just said I needed to call them and that it was important.

    Called both companies above and neither has an outstanding charge for me.

    Called the (800) number above from my wireless and it's been disconnected.

    Interesting
    I get a call about once a week or so. No one leaves even a message  Thank you all for the info. Don't answer any of the calls or reply. I have found many scams out there recently from renting apartment or homes on Craigslist to telephone calls as bill collection. What is the world coming to when people are all just leaving pay check to pay check and these people scam for money. I agree that a stop needs to made to 888 886 887 or 800 number or providers need to immediately put blocks on cell phones.for people
