this came from a wierd sounding message claiming to be amex

It is American Express. Either calling to verify a charge on your card at a merchant or talk to you about your merchant account.

I confirmed with American Express that this is a SCAM!!

I just called and spoke with American Express as well (via the number on the back of my card), and they confirmed that this number is, indeed, one of their departments that deals with Merchant Services.

This is a VALID american express number. You can always call regular customer service and they will transfer to us. The number on the back of your card can also transfer to us they should see notes.

I just spoke with American Express, their fraud department, and the Merchant Services department, and they confirmed that this is NOT a legitimate number. They also said Merchant Services would never contact a cardholder, only the merchant. If you are ever in doubt, just call the number on the back of your American Express card.

Yes, AMEX confirmed this is not a number they operate.  Do not call back, always call the number on the back of your card.

Cancel your card and get another # asap!

1-800-874-8848 is a new number for Amex Merchant services. I was hesitant too and called their main number. They verified that this was a new number. I called Oct 11 2018.

Just got a call from them. Amex confirmed that this is fake.

It was real, from Amex, verifying a late charge.

Just be careful this isn't SPOOFING.

I called American Express to report this call.
American Express will never call you. Always call the number on your credit card. This call is a scam call, and anyone who says this is a reliable phone number is part of the scam.
