They claimed to be FRAUD ALERT. The alert was on a card that was expired, so I knew it was a scam.

Don't immediately dismiss the call.  Call back gets, "Thank you for calling your fraud alert center."  Goes on to say it is retrieving your information.  Here's the thing:  Many banks, credit unions and even CC companies use third party fraud detection.  Even though the card has expired, it behooves you to "check it out."  Call the number on the card (if you still have it) or the published number for the Bank or CC company and ask to be transferred to the fraud department.  If they were trying to reach you there will be a record of it.  One of the ways scammers win is to throw doubt on legitimate fraud calls.  Initiate the call yourself and play it safe.
