Received a caller ID message from 718-557-300 claiming to be from Social Security office asking me to call toll free number of 866-226-2306. They request more information in regards to a recent (Day Before) application for SS benefits. I was suspicious, so went to local SS office to inquiry about it! The 718 number is a processing place in Jamaica, a middle-class neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens that processes applications. The toll free number is also a valid number for social security. The lady in the Iowa office, took care of the required information for us and said it was OK to check number if it looked suspicious, but that that government on line process was very secure! Always good to check if not certain!

I found this in my voicemail and was concerned because the application has been pending since March 3rd. Is this a legit SSA phone number or have I just handed over my personal information?

Social Security does not work on the weekend, especially a holiday weekend. I think that it would be really great if they took the time to set up a website with their actual phone number listed on it so that people could call them.

Called back number and extension told me to leave my name phone number and SS# I hung up; they would not ask for my SS# on the phone.

Even if it is a legitimate SS number, any number can be spoofed.  Use the official published number for the SSA ( 1-800-772-1213) or the published number for your local office.  Never give any personal or financial information to a company that calls you...initiate the call yourself.
